Key Points
- Revenue Exceeds Expectations: IREN reported quarterly revenue of $228 million for the period ended September 30, beating the analyst consensus of $221.28 million, supported by strong growth in its AI cloud business.
- Microsoft Project Timeline Extended: Changes requested by Microsoft to the network design delayed some infrastructure deliveries, pushing back part of IREN's timeline for reaching its more than $4 billion annualized run-rate revenue target to January, potentially extending into February.
- AI Cloud Revenue Accelerates: IREN's AI cloud revenue reached $200 million in the first quarter, compared with $71 million in the previous three-month period.
IREN Beats Revenue Expectations on AI Cloud Growth
IREN reported quarterly revenue above market expectations on Thursday, supported by accelerating demand for its AI cloud services.
Total revenue reached $228 million for the quarter ended September 30, exceeding the analyst consensus estimate of $221.28 million, according to LSEG data.
The company’s AI cloud revenue increased to $200 million, compared with $71 million in the preceding three-month period, highlighting the growing contribution of AI infrastructure services to its business.
IREN’s shares rose more than 4% in volatile extended trading following the earnings announcement. However, the stock had closed approximately 17% lower during Thursday’s regular session amid a broader selloff in AI infrastructure and data-center-related companies.
Microsoft Network Changes Delay Infrastructure Deliveries
Despite the revenue performance, IREN disclosed delays affecting some infrastructure deliveries for Microsoft.
The company said Microsoft requested changes to the network design, requiring adjustments to the delivery schedule. IREN stated that it would not face financial penalties for delays resulting from those changes.
The revised timeline has pushed back part of IREN’s plan to make its more than $4 billion annualized run-rate revenue target operational. The company now expects this milestone in January rather than by year-end, although the timing could extend to the end of February.
The development comes as Microsoft reportedly increases oversight of data-center projects operated by neocloud providers, including IREN, Nebius and Nscale, amid concerns about delays and rising costs.
According to a Bloomberg News report, Microsoft is stepping away from projects it considers risky and evaluating whether to enter additional agreements with these providers as it places greater emphasis on expanding its own data-center capacity.
AI Infrastructure Contracts Support Revenue Backlog
IREN said its assets and revenue are supported by contracts with Nvidia, Microsoft and 13 other counterparties.
Approximately two-thirds of the company’s revenue backlog is tied to investment-grade counterparties, providing an indication of the credit quality of a substantial portion of its contracted business.
IREN operates energy-intensive data centers that can be leased to companies developing and running artificial intelligence models. Its business therefore depends on continued demand for computing capacity and the successful delivery of infrastructure projects.
The latest revenue figures demonstrate the contribution of its AI cloud operations, while the Microsoft delivery changes highlight the execution requirements involved in scaling capacity.
Broader AI Infrastructure Selloff Adds Market Pressure
IREN’s share price also reflects wider uncertainty across the AI infrastructure sector.
Technology and data-center-related stocks experienced significant selling pressure as investors assessed the potential impact of increased regulatory scrutiny following the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections.
The market has also become more sensitive to financing requirements, construction schedules and the ability of infrastructure providers to convert large customer commitments into operational revenue.
For companies such as IREN, project execution and delivery timelines remain important alongside reported revenue growth.
What Investors Should Watch Next
IREN’s next milestones include the completion of the revised Microsoft infrastructure deliveries and the operational rollout of its more than $4 billion annualized run-rate revenue target. The potential extension of the timeline into February makes execution progress an important factor for investors.
The company’s AI cloud revenue growth and contracted relationships with major counterparties provide important indicators of demand, while Microsoft’s changing approach to third-party data-center projects introduces additional uncertainty.
Investors will be assessing whether IREN can maintain its growth trajectory while managing infrastructure delivery schedules and the broader financing and regulatory pressures affecting the AI data-center industry.
