Key Points

  • HSBC Sets a $39 Price Target: The bank expects CoreWeave's 2028–2030 non-GAAP earnings per share to fall 50%–70% below consensus estimates.
  • Financing Costs Are Central to the Bear Case: Bond yields of approximately 14%–15% could restrict access to capital and weaken the economics of future infrastructure expansion.
  • Analysts Remain Divided: HSBC highlights debt and profitability risks, while Bank of America maintains a $140 price target based on its view that the recent sell-off is primarily sentiment-driven.

HSBC Challenges CoreWeave’s Long-Term Earnings Outlook

CoreWeave is facing growing scrutiny from Wall Street as investors reassess the financial risks associated with its artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion. HSBC has taken a particularly cautious position, arguing that prevailing analyst earnings estimates underestimate the pressure that financing costs could place on the company’s long-term profitability.

Analyst Abhishek Shukla assigned CoreWeave a $39 price target, approximately 34% below its current trading level. HSBC’s forecasts for non-GAAP earnings per share between 2028 and 2030 are 50%–70% below consensus estimates.

Shukla also expects CoreWeave to achieve a long-term non-GAAP operating margin of 15%–16%, substantially below management’s guidance of approximately 25%.

The bearish outlook centers on the cost of financing expansion rather than a forecast of declining demand for artificial intelligence services.

High Bond Yields Raise Financing Concerns

CoreWeave’s debt has become a central concern for investors. According to HSBC, yields on the company’s bonds have reached approximately 14%–15%, indicating heightened market concerns about its creditworthiness.

Higher borrowing costs could limit CoreWeave’s ability to fund additional computing capacity, particularly infrastructure supported by speculative demand or short-term customer contracts. Such restrictions could weaken a potential source of future growth and reduce the company’s financial flexibility.

HSBC also questions consensus assumptions that CoreWeave will be able to secure substantially lower interest rates on its debt over time. If borrowing costs remain elevated, interest expenses could weigh more heavily on earnings and constrain the economics of future expansion.

The distinction is important because CoreWeave’s growth strategy requires substantial capital investment. Even if demand for AI computing remains strong, the company’s returns could fall short of expectations if the cost of financing capacity rises faster than its ability to generate profits.

HSBC Forecasts Deeper Earnings Shortfalls

Shukla expects CoreWeave’s loss per share in 2027 to be 13.3% greater than analysts currently estimate. For 2028, he projects earnings per share 53.7% below consensus, followed by shortfalls of 70.6% in 2029 and 64.3% in 2030.

HSBC’s projections also point to a substantial increase in leverage. CoreWeave’s net debt is expected to reach $92 billion by the end of 2030, compared with an estimated $46.9 billion at the end of 2026.

These forecasts suggest that financing expenses and balance-sheet expansion could become increasingly important determinants of shareholder returns. The central risk is that revenue growth may not translate into comparable earnings growth if debt servicing costs absorb a larger share of operating performance.

October Sell-Off Reflects Broader Investor Anxiety

CoreWeave shares have fallen 29% in October, while its corporate bonds across multiple maturities have also faced selling pressure. The market reaction reflects concerns about the company’s balance sheet and the financial implications of a potential slowdown in AI infrastructure spending.

Gartner has separately forecast that more than 80% of neocloud providers could cease independent operations by 2030 because of cost pressures and a lack of differentiated business models. CoreWeave operates within this segment, which provides specialized cloud infrastructure and computing capacity.

The forecast adds to questions about the long-term viability of businesses that depend on substantial capital investment and continued access to financing.

However, market participants remain divided over the severity of the risks facing CoreWeave. Bank of America analyst Tal Liani described the recent share-price decline as largely sentiment-driven and maintained an aggressive $140 price target. He argued that revenue growth and underlying business performance could eventually restore investor confidence.

What Investors Should Watch Next

CoreWeave’s outlook will depend on its ability to finance expansion at sustainable rates, convert infrastructure investment into earnings, and manage debt as its computing capacity grows. Bond yields and access to credit will be important indicators of whether the company can maintain its current growth strategy.

Investors will also need to assess whether actual revenue growth and operating margins support management’s expectations. The divergence between HSBC’s forecasts and the more optimistic view held by Bank of America highlights the uncertainty surrounding the relationship between AI demand, capital requirements, and long-term profitability.

For investors evaluating AI infrastructure exposure, the key question is not simply whether demand for computing capacity will grow, but whether that growth can generate sufficient returns to justify the financing required.
