Home Depot delivered a stronger-than-expected second quarter, highlighting the resilience of U.S. household spending even as elevated borrowing costs continue to constrain housing activity. The results suggest consumers remain willing to spend on maintenance and smaller improvement projects, while larger discretionary renovations remain more sensitive to financing conditions and housing-market turnover.

Sales and Earnings Exceed Expectations

Home Depot reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 sales of $47.86 billion, representing a 5.7% increase from the same period a year earlier and exceeding the approximately $47.27 billion expected by analysts. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $4.92, above the $4.73 consensus estimate. Comparable sales increased 1.7% globally and 1.3% in the United States, providing evidence of improving underlying demand despite continued pressure across the housing sector.

The earnings beat also provided a more constructive signal for the broader U.S. consumer backdrop. However, the improvement should be interpreted cautiously: customer transactions declined by approximately 1%, while higher spending per visit helped offset lower traffic. This indicates that sales growth is not necessarily being driven by a broad acceleration in consumer activity.

Smaller Projects Gain Importance as Housing Activity Remains Weak

The most significant feature of the quarter was the shift in customer behavior toward smaller home-improvement projects. Consumers continued spending on maintenance, landscaping, painting, outdoor improvements, and other relatively affordable projects while delaying larger renovations that typically require greater financial commitments. Reuters reported that larger projects remained pressured by elevated interest rates and weak housing-market activity.

This trend is important for investors because it demonstrates both the resilience and limitations of household demand. Homeowners may choose to improve existing properties rather than move, particularly while mortgage rates and home prices remain elevated. At the same time, prolonged weakness in housing turnover could continue to restrict demand for major remodeling projects.

Guidance Holds Steady as Investors Assess the Consumer

Home Depot reaffirmed its fiscal 2026 outlook, calling for total sales growth of approximately 2.5% to 4.5% and comparable sales growth ranging from flat to 2%. The company also maintained its expectation for adjusted earnings per share to grow approximately 0% to 4%. The decision to leave guidance unchanged suggests management views the stronger quarter as encouraging but not yet sufficient to warrant a material change in its full-year assumptions.

Outlook: Home Depot’s results provide a relatively positive signal for the resilience of U.S. consumer spending, but the housing market remains a key downside risk. Future performance is likely to depend on borrowing costs, housing affordability, employment conditions, and the willingness of consumers to move from essential maintenance toward larger discretionary projects. For Israeli investors monitoring U.S. equities, the earnings report also offers a useful read-through on household demand and the broader consumer cycle. Continued improvement in housing activity could broaden Home Depot’s growth base, while persistent high financing costs, inflationary pressures, tariffs, or weaker consumer confidence could limit the durability of the current momentum.
