Global markets enter September 17 following a session marked by clear regional divergence. U.S. equities finished mostly lower, while European and Asian stocks advanced broadly. Tel Aviv also strengthened, with seven of the eight supplied benchmarks rising and trading activity showing a clear tilt toward advancing securities.
America: U.S. Equities Weaken as Dow Leads Declines
U.S. markets closed September 16 with losses across most major benchmarks. The Dow 30 was the weakest of the three largest U.S. indexes, falling 1.21% to 51,461.90. The S&P 500 declined 0.45% to 7,551.81, while the Russell 2000 fell 0.40% to 2,858.81. The Nasdaq was effectively unchanged, slipping just 0.01% to 25,978.42.
The broader Americas also recorded a weaker session. The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 0.26% to 35,491.27, while Brazil’s IBOVESPA declined 0.51% to 185,547.66. The U.S. Dollar Index edged higher by 0.09% to 100.34.
The VIX stood at 17.71, up 2.97%.
The Mexico Stock Exchange was closed on September 16 for Independence Day, leaving no regular Mexican trading session to contribute to the regional performance.
Europe: Equities Advance Across the Board
European equity markets delivered a broadly positive session on September 16. All six supplied major equity benchmarks finished higher. The CAC 40 led the advance, gaining 0.62% to 8,140.59, followed by the Euronext 100, which rose 0.54% to 1,887.08.
The DAX advanced 0.53% to 25,537.75, while the EURO STOXX 50 gained 0.48% to 6,266.50. MSCI Europe increased 0.38% to 2,796.99, and the FTSE 100 added 0.28% to 10,688.47.
Currency indexes moved in the opposite direction. The Euro Index fell 0.65% to 114.63, while the British Pound Index declined 0.67% to 133.86. The data therefore showed a clear separation between the performance of European equities and the supplied currency indexes.
Asia: Broad Gains Across Major Equity Markets
Asian equity markets recorded a broadly positive session on September 16, with all six supplied major equity benchmarks advancing. The KOSPI Composite Index led the region, rising 1.37% to 6,717.97. The SSE Composite Index gained 0.71% to 3,891.60, while the Nikkei 225 advanced 0.69% to 63,923.00.
The S&P BSE SENSEX rose 0.45% to 74,334.29, while the S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.28% to 8,696.50. The Hang Seng posted a smaller increase of 0.19% to 24,713.78.
Asian currency indexes were weaker. The Australian Dollar Index declined 0.10% to 71.30, while the Japanese Yen Index fell 0.52% to 64.45. The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange was closed for Malaysia Day on September 16.
Tel Aviv: Broad Rally Led by TA-20 and TA-35
Tel Aviv markets recorded one of the stronger regional performances on September 16. Seven of the eight supplied benchmarks advanced, while the TA-90 was unchanged. The TA-20 led the gains, rising 1.41% to 4,114.60, followed by the TA-35, which gained 1.32% to 4,246.84.
The TA-125 advanced 1.04% to 4,125.35, while the TA Sector-Balance rose 0.68% to 4,707.35. The TA-SME60 gained 0.62% to 1,309.97, the TA 90 and Banks index increased 0.47% to 4,056.36, and the TA-200 added 0.41% to 3,973.53. The TA-90 remained unchanged at 3,771.52.
Market breadth confirmed the strength of the session. On the TA-35, 29 securities advanced compared with 7 that declined. On the TA-125, 79 securities rose while 43 declined. Turnover on the TA-125 reached approximately NIS 2.51 billion.
Outlook for September 17: Policy Expectations and Market Divergence in Focus
September 17 trading will put monetary-policy expectations, inflation, economic data and bond-market movements at the center of the global outlook. Investors will assess incoming economic signals alongside central-bank communication, with changes in interest-rate expectations capable of influencing equity valuations, currencies and fixed-income markets.
The sharp regional divergence seen across the September 16 session also leaves investors watching whether the gap between U.S. equities and other major markets persists. European and Asian equity markets entered the new session from a stronger position, while U.S. benchmarks closed mostly lower. Tel Aviv also enters September 17 after a broad advance supported by positive market breadth.
Currency markets will remain an important part of the picture. The U.S. Dollar Index strengthened modestly on September 16, while the supplied Euro, British Pound, Australian Dollar and Japanese Yen indexes all declined. Further moves in currencies and government bond yields could influence cross-market positioning and risk appetite.
Geopolitical developments, inflation expectations and new corporate or economic signals remain potential sources of volatility. With regional performance moving in different directions, September 17 will provide another test of whether the recent divergence across global equity markets continues or begins to narrow.
