Apple is reportedly considering a return to the enterprise server market as demand for AI infrastructure expands beyond model training toward large-scale inference. According to The Information, the company is developing a server based on its own M8 Ultra processors while evaluating Nvidia’s networking technology, a potential strategic shift that would extend Apple’s custom-silicon strategy deeper into enterprise computing.

Apple Targets the Expanding AI Infrastructure Market

The proposed system would reportedly be offered in two configurations, with either two or four M8 Ultra chips. The target market would include AI developers, businesses and government organizations seeking computing infrastructure capable of running AI models locally rather than relying entirely on external cloud platforms.

The potential move reflects a broader change in AI infrastructure demand. As AI deployment matures, computing requirements are increasingly extending from training large models to inference, the process of generating responses and executing trained models. Apple’s interest would therefore place its proprietary silicon into a market historically dominated by specialized data-center processors and networking systems.

Nvidia Technology Could Bridge Apple’s Silicon With Data Centers

Apple is reportedly evaluating Nvidia NVLink Fusion as a way to connect its M8 chips. The technology includes networking components, chiplets and software designed to facilitate high-speed communication between processors in data-center environments. The Information reported that some Apple employees involved in the project view Nvidia’s connectivity technology as among the strongest available options.

The potential use of Nvidia technology would be notable because it would allow Apple to retain control over its core processors while relying on an established external connectivity platform. For Nvidia, meanwhile, NVLink Fusion represents an opportunity to participate in AI infrastructure built around third-party processors rather than only Nvidia’s own computing platforms.

A Significant Change in Apple’s Enterprise Strategy

A dedicated enterprise server would represent a meaningful expansion of Apple’s hardware strategy. The company discontinued its Xserve server line in 2011 as it shifted its enterprise focus toward standard Mac hardware and consumer products. A return would therefore indicate that the growth of AI infrastructure is changing the economics and strategic importance of enterprise computing.

The initiative would also potentially mark a further thaw in the relationship between Apple and Nvidia. The companies have had a difficult history stretching back nearly two decades, including disputes surrounding Nvidia graphics hardware used in Apple computers. A collaboration on AI infrastructure would indicate that the strategic importance of advanced computing is creating areas of mutual interest despite that history.

Why 2029 Matters for the AI Hardware Roadmap

The reported server is not expected to reach the market until 2029, and Reuters noted that the project could still be canceled or launched without Nvidia technology. Apple and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment, while Reuters could not independently verify the report.

That long development horizon makes the project more significant as a strategic indicator than as an immediate revenue driver. Apple’s recent expansion of its M-series portfolio and continued investment in AI-capable computing provide the technological foundation, but enterprise adoption would also require strong software support, developer tools and data-center integration.

Going forward, the market will monitor whether Apple formally commits to the server initiative, which version of its silicon architecture ultimately emerges and whether Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion becomes part of the final design. Any confirmed partnership could provide further evidence of how AI infrastructure is reshaping relationships across the semiconductor and technology industries, while the eventual product strategy will determine whether Apple’s custom silicon can translate its strength in consumer computing into a meaningful enterprise presence.
