Key Points
- Five Below's Q2 FY26 revenue rose 22.9% to $1.26 billion, while comparable sales increased 14.1%, significantly ahead of the prior-year period.
- Adjusted EPS more than doubled to $1.68, compared with $0.81 a year earlier, while adjusted operating income reached $113.2 million.
- The retailer raised its full-year FY26 revenue and earnings outlook and authorized an additional $600 million share-repurchase program.
Five Below’s second-quarter results point to continued strength in value-oriented U.S. retail, with the discount chain combining strong comparable-store growth with ongoing store expansion. The performance comes as consumers remain selective about discretionary spending, making sustained traffic and sales growth at value-focused retailers an important indicator of underlying household demand.
Comparable Sales Provide the Core Growth Engine
Five Below reported $1.26 billion in second-quarter revenue, representing a 22.9% year-over-year increase and exceeding the estimated $1.22 billion. Comparable sales increased 14.1%, while the company ended the quarter with 2,022 stores, an 8.8% increase from a year earlier. The combination indicates that growth is being driven by both new-store expansion and stronger performance across the existing store base.
The sustained double-digit comparable-sales growth is particularly important because it provides a clearer indication of underlying customer demand than store expansion alone. Management highlighted the balance between new-store growth and double-digit comparable sales over the past five quarters, suggesting that merchandising execution and customer traffic remain important contributors to the company’s momentum.
Earnings Growth Outpaces Revenue Expansion
Profitability improved at an even faster pace than sales. Adjusted diluted EPS increased 107% to $1.68, compared with $0.81 in the prior-year quarter and above the $1.39 analyst estimate. Adjusted operating income reached $113.2 million, up 105% year-over-year from $55.1 million.
The improvement indicates that Five Below is converting its stronger sales performance into significantly higher operating earnings. However, the company also reported an effective tax rate of 23.9%, compared with 26.2% a year earlier, meaning changes in the tax rate contributed to the year-over-year earnings comparison and should be considered alongside the underlying operating improvement.
Higher FY26 Guidance Raises Expectations for the Second Half
Five Below raised its fiscal 2026 revenue outlook to $5.63 billion to $5.71 billion, up from its previous range of $5.40 billion to $5.48 billion. Comparable-sales growth is now expected at 10% to 12%, compared with the previous forecast of 6% to 8%. Adjusted EPS guidance increased to $9.83 to $10.31 from $8.65 to $9.05, while projected net income rose to $672 million to $698 million.
For the third quarter, the company expects revenue of $1.21 billion to $1.23 billion, adjusted EPS of $1.01 to $1.13 and comparable-sales growth of 8% to 10%. The lower comparable-sales range relative to Q2 suggests management is taking a more measured approach to the second half, despite the stronger full-year outlook.
Expansion and Capital Returns Remain Central to the Strategy
Five Below ended the quarter with 2,022 stores, up 8.8% year-over-year, underscoring the company’s continued physical expansion. At the same time, the retailer repurchased approximately $60 million of stock during the quarter, representing 311,000 shares, and authorized a new $600 million share-repurchase program.
Cash generation also remained significant, with net cash provided by operating activities reaching $442.7 million during the quarter. The combination of store expansion, operating growth and capital returns will remain important as the company enters the second half of FY26.
Looking ahead, the key question is whether Five Below can maintain elevated comparable-sales growth while continuing to expand its store network. Consumer discretionary spending, store productivity, merchandise margins, cash generation and holiday-season demand will be closely watched as the retailer works to deliver its upgraded full-year targets in an increasingly competitive U.S. retail environment.
