Cava Group has emerged as one of the strongest growth stories in the fast-casual restaurant industry since its 2023 IPO.

The Mediterranean-focused chain has built a business model similar in some ways to Chipotle, offering customizable bowls and handheld pitas through a minimalist restaurant format.

However, Cava’s growth momentum has moderated in recent quarters as inflation has pressured consumers and the broader fast-casual restaurant industry has faced a more challenging environment.

The company is scheduled to report its second-quarter results after the market closes on Tuesday, August 11.

Wall Street Expects Strong Revenue Growth

Analysts expect Cava to report second-quarter revenue of approximately $360.1 million, representing 28.3% year-over-year growth.

GAAP earnings per share are expected to improve to $0.18, compared with $0.16 in the year-ago quarter.

The company’s first-quarter results were strong, initially sending shares higher before the stock subsequently declined through June and July.

With Cava among the last major companies in its sector to report, results from competitors could provide some clues about consumer demand.

Chipotle, for example, delivered its strongest comparable-sales growth in six quarters during the second quarter, although growth was only 2.2%. Menu innovation, increased catering and stronger engagement with its rewards program helped support the improvement.

Consumer Spending Could Help Cava

One potential tailwind is the so-called “little treat economy,” which describes younger consumers choosing smaller discretionary purchases because larger expenses such as homeownership remain out of reach.

A relatively affordable restaurant meal can fit into that spending pattern, potentially supporting traffic at fast-casual chains such as Cava.

The company’s recent traffic trends provide another reason for optimism.

According to location intelligence firm Placer.ai, Cava’s foot traffic, including visits to new locations, increased 24.6% during the quarter.

That suggests the company may continue to attract customers despite the broader pressure on restaurant spending.

Food Safety Concerns Are a Risk

Food safety has emerged as another issue for the restaurant industry.

A cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce used at Taco Bell locations and a separate salmonella outbreak involving jalapeños at Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota have raised concerns across the sector.

Sweetgreen lowered its full-year guidance because of the cyclospora outbreak despite not being directly affected because it does not use iceberg lettuce.

Placer.ai found evidence that the outbreak weighed on Cava’s foot traffic for at least several days. However, the broader increase in traffic during the quarter suggests the impact may have been limited.

Why Cava Stock Could Rally

Cava shares are up only about 6% year to date and are trading near their yearly lows after falling significantly from their April peak.

That decline could create an attractive setup if the company delivers another strong earnings report.

The stock is trading at less than six times sales, according to the supplied information. While that valuation still reflects expectations for continued growth, it is more reasonable if Cava can maintain strong comparable-sales growth and continue expanding its restaurant footprint.

A combination of a revenue beat, stronger-than-expected traffic and an improved outlook could therefore provide a catalyst for the shares.

Market Outlook

Cava enters its August 11 earnings report with expectations for strong revenue growth and improving earnings, while recent traffic data provides an encouraging signal for the quarter. The key question is whether the company can maintain its growth rate as inflation and cautious consumer spending weigh on the broader restaurant industry. If Cava delivers a beat and raises its outlook, the stock’s position near its year-to-date low could amplify the upside reaction. However, investors will also need to watch comparable sales, traffic trends and any commentary surrounding food-safety concerns and consumer demand.
