- Expanded Investment in Skydio: Axon Enterprise will invest an additional $1.2 billion in drone manufacturer Skydio, increasing its ownership stake to approximately 37% and becoming the company's exclusive distributor in the US and Canada.
- Revenue Growth Forecast Reduced: Axon lowered its 2026 revenue growth outlook to approximately 30%, citing the exclusion of three federal Dedrone deployments worth about $130 million.
- Shares Decline After Earnings Disappointment: Axon shares fell approximately 14% in extended trading after the company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.72, below Wall Street expectations of $1.88.
Axon Expands Strategic Investment in Skydio
Axon Enterprise, the manufacturer of TASER devices, announced an additional $1.2 billion investment in drone manufacturer Skydio on Thursday, strengthening its position in the growing market for autonomous aerial technology.
The transaction will increase Axon’s stake in Skydio to approximately 37%, valuing the drone company at $5.2 billion on a pre-money basis. Axon will also become Skydio’s exclusive distributor in the United States and Canada.
The investment will consist of a combination of cash and Axon stock. The transactions are expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.
The agreement highlights increasing demand for drone technology among police departments, emergency response organizations and government agencies.
Autonomous Drones Expand Public Safety Applications
Skydio develops AI-powered autonomous drones used by public safety agencies and military customers across the United States.
The partnership builds on Axon’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, which deploys drones to emergency incidents before officers arrive.
According to Axon, agencies using the program have reduced priority response times by as much as 65%. Drones reportedly arrive before officers in approximately 80% of deployed calls.
These operational results illustrate the potential role of autonomous drones in emergency response, where faster access to aerial information can support situational awareness and coordination.
Axon’s increased investment and exclusive distribution agreement position the company to expand its involvement in this market.
Revenue Forecast Reduction Pressures Axon Shares
Despite the strategic expansion, Axon’s financial outlook weighed on investor sentiment.
The company reduced its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to approximately 30%, citing the exclusion of three federal Dedrone deployments totaling about $130 million.
Axon shares declined approximately 14% to $329 in extended trading following the announcement.
The market reaction also reflected weaker-than-expected third-quarter profitability. Axon reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.72, missing analyst expectations of $1.88, according to LSEG data.
The combination of a lower revenue growth outlook and an earnings shortfall overshadowed the company’s expanded commitment to Skydio.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Axon’s additional investment creates a larger strategic relationship with Skydio and strengthens its position in the autonomous drone market. The exclusive distribution agreement could support the expansion of drone adoption among public safety and government customers in North America.
However, investors will also be assessing the company’s ability to deliver on its revised revenue outlook and maintain profitability while increasing its investment commitment.
The upcoming transaction closings, performance of the DFR program and contribution of Skydio to Axon’s broader business will be important developments to monitor.
