The global technology sector is facing an increasingly important cost challenge as artificial intelligence investment accelerates demand for advanced memory chips. Apple is now experiencing the effects of this shift, with rising component prices threatening to weaken margins even as premium iPhone demand remains relatively strong. The company’s November 2 earnings report and subsequent management commentary triggered renewed selling pressure, highlighting the growing tension between revenue expansion and the cost of maintaining profitability.

Memory Prices Create a New Margin Challenge

Apple reported a gross margin of 47.9% for its September quarter, already reflecting pressure from higher memory expenses. The company expects that figure to decline to between 45% and 46% in the December quarter, traditionally an important period because of holiday-season demand.

CEO John Ternus described the current memory-pricing environment as unprecedented, indicating that component costs could continue increasing beyond the December quarter. Apple has benefited from previously purchased inventory secured at lower prices, but this advantage is expected to diminish as more expensive supplies enter its production cycle.

The broader industry dynamics are closely connected to the expansion of AI data centers, which is increasing demand for memory products and intensifying competition for available supply. This creates a potential cost disadvantage for consumer electronics manufacturers, particularly when component prices rise faster than retail prices can be adjusted.

Strong iPhone Demand Provides Some Protection

Despite the margin concerns, Apple’s operating performance demonstrated continued demand for its premium devices. Fourth-quarter iPhone revenue reached $57.58 billion, exceeding analyst expectations of approximately $56.54 billion, according to LSEG data. Total company revenue increased 12% to approximately $114.5 billion, while earnings per share reached $2.10, above market estimates.

Higher prices across several product categories have helped offset rising manufacturing expenses. However, Apple’s ability to continue passing additional costs to consumers remains uncertain, particularly as household purchasing power faces pressure from inflation and elevated living expenses.

The company’s services business also requires attention. Apple forecast December-quarter services revenue growth of 8%–9%, below analysts’ expectations of approximately 10.7%. This is relevant because services have historically provided an important source of recurring revenue and comparatively attractive margins.

AI Investment and Supply-Chain Commitments Add Complexity

Beyond memory prices, Apple is facing additional expenses associated with developing and expanding its AI-powered Siri capabilities. These investments could strengthen the company’s ecosystem over time, but the near-term financial impact is becoming more visible.

Apple’s manufacturing purchase obligations increased by approximately $33 billion between June and September, reaching $89.7 billion. This reflects a substantial increase in commitments as the company works with suppliers to secure future production capacity. While stronger supply arrangements could reduce shortages, they also increase the importance of managing procurement costs and demand forecasts.

The outlook will depend on how effectively Apple balances pricing adjustments, supplier relationships, inventory management and AI investment. Investors will monitor memory-chip prices, holiday-quarter demand, services growth and the pace of margin recovery. For global and Israeli investors, currency fluctuations and broader technology-sector valuations also remain relevant portfolio considerations. Apple’s ecosystem and premium positioning may provide some protection against rising costs, but sustained component inflation or weaker consumer demand could limit profitability. The coming quarters should provide a clearer indication of whether the company can preserve its margin structure while competing in an increasingly AI-driven technology market.
