Shopify’s third-quarter 2026 results highlighted continued expansion across its global commerce platform, with stronger transaction volumes and significant improvement in cash generation. Although revenue came in marginally below analyst expectations, the company’s 32% annual growth, expanding merchant activity, and 61% increase in free cash flow point to a business maintaining substantial operating momentum.

GMV Growth and Merchant Solutions Drive Business Expansion

Shopify reported revenue of $3.74 billion, representing 32% year-over-year growth, compared with the analyst estimate of $3.75 billion. The small shortfall against expectations was accompanied by stronger performance in gross merchandise volume (GMV), which reached $119.15 billion, exceeding the $118.73 billion estimate and increasing 29% from the previous year.

The difference between revenue and GMV is important. GMV measures the value of orders processed through the platform, while revenue represents the income Shopify recognizes from its services. The continued expansion in GMV indicates growing transaction activity across its merchant network, providing an important foundation for future platform revenue.

Merchant Solutions generated $2.91 billion, up 35% year over year and above the $2.88 billion estimate. By comparison, Subscription Solutions revenue reached $836 million, increasing 20% but falling short of the $855.5 million estimate. The figures show that Merchant Solutions was the stronger growth contributor during the quarter, while subscription revenue continued to expand at a slower pace.

Monthly recurring revenue also increased 19% to $230 million, slightly exceeding the $229.1 million estimate. This provides an additional indication of continued growth in Shopify’s subscription-related business and the recurring commercial relationships supporting its platform.

Free Cash Flow and Operating Profitability Strengthen

One of the most significant elements of the quarter was Shopify’s improvement in cash generation. Free cash flow reached $816 million, compared with the analyst estimate of $721 million, representing a 61% year-over-year increase. The free cash flow margin stood at 22%, indicating that a larger proportion of revenue was converted into cash available to support the business.

Gross profit totaled $1.78 billion, approximately 28% higher year over year and above the $1.76 billion estimate. Operating income reached $568 million, increasing 66% from the comparable period.

These results suggest that Shopify’s expansion is being accompanied by stronger operating performance. Revenue growth remains important, but the improvement in free cash flow and operating income provides a broader view of the company’s financial development. For a technology platform serving merchants across multiple markets, the ability to scale transaction activity while strengthening cash generation is particularly relevant.

Fourth-Quarter Guidance Points to Continued Growth

Shopify’s fourth-quarter outlook indicates that management expects the business to maintain its current growth trajectory. The company projected revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range year over year, alongside gross profit growth in the high-twenties percentage range.

Operating expenses are expected to represent 29% to 30% of revenue, while stock-based compensation is projected at approximately $155 million. Management also expects the free cash flow margin to remain consistent with the level recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The guidance suggests that Shopify is seeking to balance continued investment in its platform with disciplined cost management. Stock-based compensation and operating expenses will remain important considerations when assessing how much of the company’s revenue growth translates into operating income and cash generation.

Management described the quarter as an example of Shopify supporting merchants in both their current business environments and the direction in which commerce is developing. Its strategy includes extending commerce capabilities across an expanding range of surfaces and increasingly across different environments.

Looking ahead, investors will be monitoring whether GMV growth remains strong, whether Subscription Solutions can accelerate, and whether Merchant Solutions can sustain its current expansion. The company’s ability to maintain a 22% free cash flow margin while investing in platform development will also be important. Shopify’s latest results demonstrate substantial operating momentum, but sustaining that performance will depend on continued merchant activity, consumer demand, and disciplined execution across its global commerce ecosystem.
