Key Points

  • Anthropic has committed $11.6 billion over seven years to Akamai for distributed cloud infrastructure supporting the AI company's growing CPU workloads.
  • The agreement can expand by another $9 billion, potentially taking the total commitment to approximately $20 billion.
  • Akamai expects about $5.5 billion in capital expenditures related to the initial agreement, while Anthropic received a warrant that could represent up to approximately 5% of Akamai's common stock.

Anthropic has signed a seven-year, $11.6 billion cloud infrastructure commitment with Akamai Technologies, highlighting the growing scale of computing demand behind the AI industry. The agreement is focused on CPU workloads and could ultimately reach approximately $20 billion, underscoring how AI companies are increasingly securing large amounts of long-term computing capacity beyond traditional GPU infrastructure.

Anthropic Expands Its Computing Capacity

Under the agreement, Anthropic will leverage Akamai Cloud’s distributed infrastructure and software to support the expansion of its CPU workloads at scale. The initial commitment totals $11.6 billion over seven years and builds on an earlier relationship between the companies, including a previously announced $1.8 billion multi-year commitment.

The agreement includes an option to expand the relationship by up to an additional $9 billion. If fully exercised, the potential value would reach approximately $20 billion over the seven-year period. The scale of the commitment reflects the infrastructure requirements associated with developing and operating increasingly sophisticated AI models and services.

Akamai Faces Significant Upfront Investment

For Akamai, the contract provides substantial long-term revenue visibility but also requires significant investment before the full economic benefit is realized. The company estimates total capital expenditures related to the initial $11.6 billion commitment at approximately $5.5 billion. Akamai expects to spend about $1.7 billion of that amount during 2026, including spending to secure and pre-purchase critical supply-chain components such as memory.

The revenue ramp is expected to develop over several years. Akamai anticipates initial service activity beginning in late 2027, with the full contracted revenue run rate expected by the end of 2028. Once fully ramped, the agreement is expected to generate approximately $1.7 billion in annual revenue for the remainder of the contract term. Akamai has said the deal does not change its 2026 revenue guidance.

Equity Ties Anthropic’s Interests to Akamai

The transaction also creates a direct equity connection between the two companies. Akamai issued Anthropic a warrant for non-voting convertible Series B preferred stock representing up to approximately 5% of Akamai’s outstanding common stock on an as-converted basis. The warrant covers approximately 7.7 million common shares and carries an exercise price of $111.33 per share.

Approximately 2% of Akamai’s common stock is expected to vest in connection with the initial $11.6 billion commitment. The remaining approximately 3% would vest as the relationship expands, with each additional $3 billion purchase of cloud services resulting in approximately 1% of Akamai’s common stock vesting, subject to the agreement’s terms.

Going forward, investors will be watching the pace at which Anthropic’s computing demand translates into Akamai revenue, the timing of the required capital expenditures and whether the additional $9 billion commitment is ultimately exercised. The broader question for the AI infrastructure market is whether long-term CPU demand can generate attractive returns on the large investments required to build and secure capacity as AI workloads continue to scale.
