Airbus is facing a potential slowdown in September aircraft deliveries after a recently identified quality issue affected its A321neo program, according to two industry sources cited by Reuters. The disruption comes at a sensitive point for the European aerospace group, which is simultaneously managing a large order backlog, production constraints and an ambitious ramp-up across its single-aisle aircraft portfolio.

A321neo Delays Push Deliveries Into Fourth Quarter

A cumulative 20 A321neo aircraft have been pushed into the fourth quarter partly because of the quality problem, one of the sources said. The issue does not affect aircraft safety, and several airlines have continued accepting A321neos, limiting the immediate operational implications for customers.

Nevertheless, the timing is significant because Airbus typically relies heavily on deliveries toward the end of each quarter to convert its production activity into revenue and cash flow. A delay from September into October or later does not necessarily eliminate the underlying value of the aircraft, but it can shift the recognition of revenue and cash generation between reporting periods.

Production Ramp-Up Adds Operational Pressure

Airbus is in the middle of an extensive expansion of A320 Family production. The company said in September that its new Toulouse delivery center was designed to streamline the final stages before aircraft handover and support the production ramp-up. As of the end of August, the A320 Family backlog stood at 7,577 aircraft, including 5,691 A321neos.

The company is targeting production capability of between 70 and 75 A320 Family aircraft per month by the end of 2027, with a longer-term objective of stabilizing at a rate of 75 aircraft monthly. The A321neo is central to that strategy because of its strong position in the single-aisle market and its substantial share of the existing backlog.

2026 Delivery Target Remains an Important Benchmark

Airbus maintained its 2026 guidance at its first-half results, targeting approximately 870 commercial aircraft deliveries, adjusted EBIT of around €7.5 billion and free cash flow before customer financing of approximately €4.5 billion. Through June, the company had delivered 351 commercial aircraft, up from 306 in the first half of 2025.

By the end of August, Airbus had delivered 475 aircraft for the year, according to its monthly delivery data. That means the company still has a substantial number of aircraft to deliver during the final four months of 2026 to reach its annual target.

Quality and Supply Chains Remain Critical

The latest issue also highlights the operational complexity involved in Airbus’ production expansion. The company has previously faced supply-chain constraints, including shortages of Pratt & Whitney engines, while quality-related disruptions have affected the A320 Family in earlier periods. Airbus has emphasized that safety and quality remain priorities as it increases production capacity.

For global investors, the next focus will be on whether the A321neo delays remain contained or begin affecting the broader delivery schedule. Airbus’ September delivery figures, fourth-quarter handovers, production rates and 2026 guidance will provide important indicators of how effectively the company is managing the quality issue while maintaining its long-term production ramp-up. The strength of the order backlog provides substantial visibility, but converting that demand into timely deliveries remains a critical operational and financial test.
