Key Points
- Applied Optoelectronics reported $269.9 million in Q3 revenue, an increase of 128% year over year, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of record revenue.
- Data Center revenue surged 254% to $155.6 million, becoming the company's largest reported segment, while CATV revenue increased 57% to $110.9 million.
- Q4 revenue guidance of $385 million to $420 million fell below the $427 million estimate, while management highlighted power availability and construction constraints affecting its 2027 U.S. capacity expansion.
Applied Optoelectronics (NASDAQ: AAOI) delivered another quarter of substantial revenue growth, reflecting increasing demand for high-bandwidth optical connectivity products used in data centers and telecommunications infrastructure. The company’s 128% year-over-year revenue increase underscores the accelerating importance of optical networking within the artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout, although its next-quarter revenue forecast and capacity expansion timeline point to execution challenges.
Data Center Demand Becomes a Major Growth Engine
Applied Optoelectronics generated $269.9 million in third-quarter revenue, exceeding the $268 million estimate and representing growth of 128% compared with the same period last year. Adjusted earnings per share reached $0.17, above the $0.14 estimate, while GAAP EPS was $0.07. The company also reported a non-GAAP gross margin of 28.7%.
The strongest contribution came from the Data Center segment, which generated $155.6 million in revenue, an increase of 254% year over year. CATV revenue reached $110.9 million, rising 57%, while Telecom revenue declined 27% to $2.7 million. Other revenue contributed $0.7 million.
The segment figures highlight a significant shift in the company’s revenue composition. Data Center has become its largest reported business, reflecting demand for optical components that support increasingly complex and bandwidth-intensive computing environments. As cloud providers and AI infrastructure developers expand their facilities, high-speed optical connectivity has become an important component of data transmission between servers and networking systems.
Production Expansion Targets the AI Infrastructure Market
Management reported a sixth consecutive quarter of record revenue and outlined plans to expand manufacturing capacity to address anticipated demand. According to the earnings highlights, monthly production capacity is expected to approach 330,000 units, with production targets exceeding 500,000 800G and 1.6T pieces per month by the end of 2026, and more than one million by the end of 2027.
These targets reflect the growing commercial importance of higher-speed optical transceivers and connectivity solutions. The transition toward more powerful AI computing systems requires faster data transmission and greater network capacity, creating opportunities for suppliers positioned within the optical infrastructure ecosystem.
The company also announced a multi-year strategic agreement with a Tier 1 hyperscale data center customer. Management described the agreement as a development that improves long-term business visibility and reinforces expectations for continued demand for high-bandwidth, energy-efficient optical connectivity products.
However, expanding production capacity requires more than manufacturing investment. Access to electricity, facility readiness, equipment installation and supply-chain coordination can determine how quickly additional output becomes commercially available. These factors are particularly relevant as infrastructure developers compete to secure power and construction resources for large-scale AI facilities.
Q4 Guidance and Power Constraints Shape the Outlook
For the fourth quarter, Applied Optoelectronics expects revenue between $385 million and $420 million, below the $427 million analyst estimate cited in the earnings summary. Adjusted EPS guidance stands between $0.48 and $0.63, compared with the $0.56 estimate, while the company forecasts a non-GAAP gross margin of 29.5% to 31%.
The revenue guidance indicates that the company expects another substantial increase in quarterly sales, although the forecast range falls short of the cited market expectation. The projected improvement in gross margin compared with Q3 could support operating performance, provided that production expansion and product mix develop as anticipated.
A significant execution consideration concerns the company’s U.S. manufacturing expansion for 2027. Management indicated that the capacity expansion plan would take longer than expected because of delays in obtaining necessary electrical power, alongside other construction-related issues. This is an important constraint for companies serving the AI infrastructure market, where demand growth does not automatically translate into immediate production or revenue.
Looking ahead, investors will be monitoring whether Applied Optoelectronics can convert its strategic customer agreements into sustained revenue growth while delivering its manufacturing targets. Progress in 800G and 1.6T production, Data Center segment performance, gross margin development and access to electricity will be particularly important. The company’s ability to manage these operational constraints while meeting customer demand will help determine how effectively it can capitalize on the global expansion of AI and hyperscale data center infrastructure.
