AI Infrastructure Concerns Weigh on Semiconductor Stocks

Global markets delivered mixed signals on Thursday as investors assessed the implications of the US midterm election results for technology investment, energy markets, and monetary conditions.

Semiconductor stocks remained under pressure amid concerns that a Democrat-controlled Congress could increase scrutiny of artificial intelligence infrastructure development, particularly data center construction and associated power requirements.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index declined 3.1%, extending its losses over the past month to approximately 25%. European semiconductor-related companies also weakened, with ASML, Soitec, and Infineon falling between 3% and 8%.

The political developments added uncertainty to an AI investment cycle already facing questions about infrastructure spending and its broader economic implications.

Democratic candidates who campaigned partly on restrictions or moratoriums on data center construction secured victories in Texas and Georgia, raising questions about the regulatory environment surrounding future projects.

US Equities Rally Despite Technology Weakness

US benchmark indices advanced overnight following the midterm election results. The S&P 500 gained 1.6%, as investors responded to the clarity of the election outcome.

However, technology stocks continued to struggle, reflecting concerns about potential restrictions on AI infrastructure investment.

Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.8%, while S&P 500 futures edged up 0.1%, indicating a divergence in market positioning.

Deutsche Bank strategist Jim Reid said the election outcome was broadly consistent with investor expectations, although the scale of the Democratic victory was larger than anticipated. He also noted that historical midterm election patterns have generally been supportive of US equities over the following year.

State Street Investment Management strategist Masahiko Loo said Democratic control could increase political risk around US AI investment, particularly regarding data centers, electricity demand, and consumer costs. However, he noted that President Donald Trump’s veto authority limits the extent of potential policy changes.

European Markets Benefit From Sector Rotation

European equities continued to advance, with the STOXX 600 rising 0.4% and approaching its August record high.

The region’s market composition, which has greater exposure to banking and pharmaceutical companies than the US technology-heavy market, contributed to the different performance.

Banking and pharmaceutical stocks advanced, while semiconductor-related companies declined.

Renewable energy shares also gained, with Denmark’s Ørsted rising 5.3% and Vestas advancing 2.3%. The gains followed a period in which the renewable energy sector had faced pressure from policies pursued by the Trump administration.

The divergence highlights how political developments and sector composition are influencing regional equity performance.

Oil Rebounds as Investors Reassess Iran Conflict Risks

Brent crude recovered approximately 2.5% to $96.80 per barrel after falling nearly 9% overnight and briefly moving below $100 for the first time in two months.

The previous decline reflected investor expectations that the political consequences of the Iran conflict could reduce the likelihood of further escalation.

President Trump acknowledged that the war had contributed to Republican losses in the midterm elections. Vice President JD Vance also publicly attributed the defeat to the conflict.

However, uncertainty surrounding the duration and potential outcome of the conflict continued to influence oil market positioning.

The recovery in crude prices also supported the US dollar after both had weakened alongside falling Treasury yields.

Gold, Treasury Yields and Currency Markets

Gold traded above $4,100 per ounce after gaining approximately 5% over two sessions, marking its largest two-day increase since early April.

US Treasury prices eased from earlier highs as oil recovered. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield remained unchanged at 4.89%.

The US dollar edged higher against major currencies. The euro held around $1.1222, while the British pound traded near $1.3466.

Sterling remained supported after the Bank of England raised interest rates for the first time since 2023 and indicated that further increases could be necessary if the Iran conflict continues.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Markets will continue assessing whether the US political shift leads to meaningful changes in data center approvals, AI infrastructure investment, and energy policy. Semiconductor performance will remain sensitive to developments affecting the economics and regulatory environment of large-scale AI projects.

Oil prices will depend heavily on the trajectory of the Iran conflict and the possibility of further escalation or diplomatic progress. Changes in crude prices may also influence inflation expectations, Treasury yields, and currency movements.

The latest session reflects a market environment in which political developments are influencing sector valuations and commodity expectations. Investors will be watching whether the recent divergence between technology stocks, renewable energy shares, and broader equities develops into a more sustained shift in market leadership.
