Asian Markets Deliver Sharp Contrasts

Asian markets recorded a highly divergent performance on November 5, 2026, as strong advances in Hong Kong, India and Australia contrasted with substantial losses in South Korea and Japan. The Hang Seng posted the largest gain among the listed equity benchmarks, while the KOSPI recorded the steepest decline.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng surged 3.67% to 24,796.98, gaining 877.48 points from its previous reported close of 23,919.50. The advance pushed the index closer to 25,000 and represented the strongest percentage increase among the major regional benchmarks.

India’s S&P BSE SENSEX climbed 2.62% to 79,324.89, adding 2,078.12 points from its previous reported level of 77,246.77. The benchmark moved above 79,000, extending its recent upward momentum.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 also recorded a strong session, advancing 2.61% to 9,065.10. The increase of 230.60 points brought the index above the 9,000 threshold.

Hong Kong and Australia Lead Regional Advances

The Hang Seng’s 3.67% rally represented the strongest performance among the listed equity indices. Its advance followed a 1.67% increase in the previous reported session, extending the recovery in Hong Kong equities.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 recorded its strongest reported advance in the recent sequence, moving above 9,000 after previously trading below that level. The 2.61% increase contrasted with its 0.59% decline on November 4.

India’s SENSEX also delivered a substantial advance, rising more than 2,000 points. The move extended the benchmark’s recent gains and brought it closer to the 80,000 level.

The SSE Composite Index edged up 0.10% to 3,689.91, gaining 3.74 points. Its modest increase contrasted with the stronger advances in Hong Kong, India and Australia.

South Korea and Japan Face Significant Selling Pressure

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index fell 5.28% to 5,383.80, losing 300 points from its previous reported close of 5,683.80. The decline reversed the previous session’s 0.62% gain and represented the largest loss among the listed equity benchmarks.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 1.79% to 61,077.90, shedding 1,110.73 points from its previous reported level of 62,188.63. The index extended its recent weakness and moved closer to the 61,000 threshold.

The sharp declines in South Korea and Japan stood in contrast to the strong advances elsewhere in Asia, highlighting the significant differences in market direction during the session.

Currency and Private Equity Indicators

The Australian Dollar Currency Index gained 0.56% to 70.06, recording the strongest increase among the listed non-equity indicators. The PHLX Yen advanced 0.19% to 63.13, while APAC Private Equity edged up 0.02% to 6,879.85.

The relatively modest movements in these indicators contrasted with the larger percentage changes across the region’s major equity benchmarks.

Outlook

The November 5 session highlighted an unusually wide performance gap across Asian markets. Strong advances in Hong Kong, India and Australia were offset by significant losses in South Korea and Japan. Investors may monitor whether the Hang Seng can sustain its move toward 25,000, whether the SENSEX can maintain its position above 79,000, and whether the KOSPI stabilizes following its sharp decline. The ability of regional markets to maintain their divergent trajectories will remain an important focus in subsequent sessions.
