Qualcomm’s fourth-quarter 2026 results illustrate the strategic transition underway at one of the semiconductor industry’s major suppliers. While weaker handset revenue weighed on overall performance, growth in automotive and Internet of Things businesses highlights the company’s efforts to diversify beyond its traditional smartphone exposure and establish a larger position in AI infrastructure.

Handset Weakness Pressures Quarterly Financial Performance

Qualcomm reported $10.44 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, slightly above the $10.11 billion estimate cited in the earnings summary, but 7% below the comparable period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share reached $2.17, exceeding the $2.16 estimate, although declining 28% year over year. GAAP EPS was reported at $1.17.

The company’s largest business, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT), generated $9.02 billion in revenue, down 8% year over year. Within this segment, handset revenue declined 26% to $5.14 billion, reflecting the pressure on Qualcomm’s smartphone-related business. The weakness is particularly relevant because handsets remain a substantial contributor to the company’s overall revenue base.

Qualcomm’s QTL licensing business generated $1.30 billion, also declining 7% year over year. The QCT segment reported an EBT margin of 24%, providing an indication of the profitability of its core chip operations. Together, the results demonstrate that growth in newer markets has not yet fully offset the contraction in established businesses.

Automotive and IoT Provide Important Diversification

The strongest performance came from Qualcomm’s non-handset businesses. Automotive revenue increased 89% to $1.99 billion, substantially exceeding the $1.71 billion estimate. IoT revenue rose 14% to $1.89 billion, compared with the $1.82 billion estimate.

These results reinforce the strategic importance of Qualcomm’s diversification efforts. Automotive semiconductor demand is increasingly linked to connected vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems and the growing electronic content of modern cars. Meanwhile, IoT applications extend Qualcomm’s technology into connected devices and industrial environments.

Management described fiscal 2027 as the beginning of an anticipated inflection in non-handset revenue. The company expects these revenues to grow by more than 60% year over year, while reiterating its fiscal 2027 data center revenue target of $5.3 billion.

The projected growth would represent a significant change in Qualcomm’s revenue composition. However, the extent to which these businesses can compensate for continued weakness in smartphones will depend on customer adoption, product execution and the timing of new commercial deployments.

Amazon Collaboration Expands Qualcomm’s AI Data Center Ambitions

A central strategic announcement was Qualcomm’s multi-generational product collaboration with Amazon for AI data centers. The agreement points to an effort to extend Qualcomm’s semiconductor capabilities into infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence workloads.

The data center market has become an important growth opportunity for semiconductor companies as cloud providers and technology groups expand computing capacity to support AI applications. Qualcomm’s reiterated $5.3 billion fiscal 2027 data center revenue target indicates that management expects this business to become a meaningful contributor to its diversification strategy.

For the first quarter, Qualcomm expects revenue of $10.4 billion to $11.2 billion, compared with the $10.48 billion estimate cited in the earnings summary. Non-GAAP EPS is projected at $2.15 to $2.35, against an estimate of $2.27, while GAAP EPS guidance stands at $1.03 to $1.23.

The company also reported $1.01 billion in share repurchases and a quarterly dividend of $0.92 per share. These capital returns demonstrate continued shareholder distributions, although their sustainability must be assessed alongside investment requirements and future cash generation.

Qualcomm’s next phase will depend on whether automotive, IoT and data center growth can become large enough to reduce its exposure to the cyclical smartphone market. Investors will be watching execution of the Amazon collaboration, progress toward the $5.3 billion data center target and the pace of non-handset revenue expansion. The company’s ability to deliver this transition while maintaining profitability will be central to its longer-term competitive position in the global semiconductor industry.
