Key Points
- Nikkei declines sharply: Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 2.1% to 63,290.11 on Friday after dropping as much as 3%, with semiconductor and AI-related stocks leading losses.
- AI investment profitability questioned: Weak reactions to earnings from major US technology companies, including Amazon and Intel, intensified concerns about rising infrastructure costs and cash burn.
- Weekly performance remains positive: Despite Friday's decline, the Nikkei gained 1% for the week, while the broader Topix finished Friday down 1% and remained flat over the week.
Japanese Technology Stocks Lead Market Decline
Japanese equities fell on Friday as concerns over the sustainability of artificial intelligence investment triggered a broad sell-off in technology shares. The Nikkei 225 dropped 2.1% to 63,290.11 after falling as much as 3% during the session.
The decline followed overnight losses on Wall Street, where earnings developments from major technology companies reinforced investor concerns about the financial returns from AI infrastructure spending.
Amazon and Intel came under pressure after their latest results highlighted substantial cash outflows, weighing on their shares and other companies exposed to the technology investment cycle.
Maki Sawada, an equities strategist at Nomura Securities, said concerns about the profitability of AI investments were increasingly weighing on share prices.
Semiconductor and AI Stocks Bear the Brunt
Chip-related companies were among the weakest performers in Tokyo. Advantest declined 5.9%, while Tokyo Electron fell 5.2%, making them major contributors to the Nikkei’s decline.
Other technology-related losses were more pronounced. Ibiden dropped 15.2%, Lasertec declined 8.8%, and SoftBank Group lost 6%.
The performance reflected growing sensitivity to earnings expectations and the substantial capital requirements associated with expanding AI infrastructure.
Trading has been particularly volatile throughout the week as corporate earnings from Japan, the United States and South Korea triggered sharp movements across technology stocks.
Bank of Japan Decision Has Limited Market Impact
The Bank of Japan held interest rates steady, as widely expected, but announced that it would accelerate the pace of its exchange-traded fund sales beginning in January.
The decision had limited influence on Friday’s market direction, as investor attention remained focused on technology earnings and concerns about AI investment returns.
The policy development nevertheless adds another consideration for Japanese equities as investors assess the central bank’s approach to monetary policy and its holdings of financial assets.
Lower Oil Prices Offer Some Support
Falling crude oil prices provided a partial offset to the weakness in technology shares. Optimism surrounding Middle East peace talks helped reduce oil prices, supporting Japanese equities through the country’s exposure to imported energy.
Japan depends heavily on energy imports, particularly from the Middle East. Lower crude prices can therefore ease pressure on energy costs and provide support for businesses and consumers.
However, this positive influence was insufficient to offset the broader technology-led decline.
Mixed Performance Across Japanese Equities
The broader Topix index performed better than the Nikkei, falling 1% on Friday while remaining unchanged for the week.
Market participation was relatively balanced within the Nikkei’s 225 components, with 123 stocks declining, 100 advancing and two unchanged.
Some companies delivered strong gains following earnings announcements. Game maker Konami surged 15%, becoming the index’s largest percentage gainer. Oriental Land, operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, advanced 8.5%.
The contrast highlights how company-specific earnings performance continued to influence individual stocks despite broader market weakness.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors will continue monitoring global technology earnings, semiconductor demand and the financial returns generated by AI infrastructure investment. The performance of major US technology companies remains an important influence on Japanese chipmakers and equipment suppliers.
Developments in oil prices and the Bank of Japan’s planned ETF sales will also remain relevant. While lower energy costs may support Japan’s import-dependent economy, the sustainability of technology investment and earnings growth is likely to remain central to market sentiment.
