Asian Markets Deliver a Divergent Performance
Asian markets ended October 30, 2026, with mixed results as gains in Hong Kong, India and Australia contrasted with substantial losses in South Korea, Japan and mainland China. The Hang Seng recorded the strongest advance among the listed equity benchmarks, while the KOSPI led regional declines.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng climbed 1.46% to 23,294.42, gaining 335.77 points from its previous reported close of 22,958.65. The advance reversed the previous session’s 0.59% decline and returned the index above 23,000.
India’s S&P BSE SENSEX increased 0.53% to 74,546.80, adding 566.05 points from its previous close of 73,980.75. The benchmark moved above the 74,500 level, extending its positive performance from October 29.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.18% to 8,908.10, maintaining its position above 8,900 despite the broader weakness across several regional markets.
South Korea and Japan Face Sharp Declines
South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index fell 3.48% to 5,730.74, losing 206.92 points from its previous reported close of 5,937.66. The decline followed a 1.24% loss on October 29, extending the benchmark’s retreat after its strong 6.63% rally on October 28.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 2.12% to 63,290.11, declining 1,369.36 points from its previous close of 64,659.47. The move reversed its previous session’s 1.10% advance and brought the index closer to the 63,000 level.
The simultaneous declines in South Korea and Japan contrasted sharply with the gains recorded in Hong Kong and India, highlighting the uneven direction of regional equity markets.
Mainland China Extends Its Weakness
The SSE Composite Index declined 1.44% to 3,599.02, losing 52.41 points from its previous reported close of 3,651.43. The benchmark moved closer to the 3,600 level, extending its decline from the previous session.
The weakness in mainland Chinese equities contrasted with the stronger performance in Hong Kong, demonstrating the divergence between the two markets during the session.
Currency and Private Equity Indicators
The PHLX Yen edged up 0.08% to 63.42, while the APAC Private Equity index slipped 0.12% to 6,932.52.
The Australian Dollar Currency Index declined 0.30% to 70.32, making it the weakest performer among the listed non-equity indicators. The modest changes across these measures contrasted with the sharper movements in the major equity benchmarks.
Outlook
The October 30 session closed the week with a divided regional performance. Hong Kong and India advanced, while South Korea, Japan and mainland China recorded notable losses. Investors may monitor whether the Hang Seng can sustain its recovery above 23,000, whether the SENSEX maintains its position above 74,500, and whether selling pressure continues across the KOSPI and Nikkei. The next trading sessions will provide further insight into whether the latest declines represent a broader regional correction or isolated market weakness.
