Key Points
- Annual delivery target unchanged: Airbus maintained its goal of delivering approximately 870 aircraft in 2026, a potential company record that would require a record fourth-quarter delivery performance.
- Mixed third-quarter results: Adjusted operating profit reached €1.77 billion, broadly matching analyst expectations, while revenue declined 2% to €17.47 billion, falling short of forecasts.
- Supply constraints remain a risk: Airbus reported that supply-chain pressures had begun to ease, but delays persisted as the company increased production and inventories ahead of its year-end delivery push.
Airbus Keeps Focus on Record Deliveries
Airbus maintained its full-year financial forecasts and production plans on Wednesday despite mixed third-quarter results, leaving its ability to meet its aircraft-delivery target as the central issue for investors.
The European planemaker continues to target approximately 870 aircraft deliveries in 2026, which would represent its highest annual total. Achieving that goal will require a record fourth quarter, as the company traditionally delivers more aircraft toward the end of the year.
Ronan Murphy, a director at Alton Aviation Consultancy, said investors would closely monitor whether Airbus could reach the target or signal a shortfall before the year ends. He added that the company’s decision to retain its forecast suggests management believes the goal remains achievable.
Revenue Falls Short of Expectations
Airbus reported adjusted operating profit of €1.77 billion for the three months ended September, broadly in line with analysts’ estimates compiled by the company.
Revenue, however, declined 2% to €17.47 billion, below the expected €17.91 billion. The mixed performance leaves investors assessing whether the company can translate its production plans into the anticipated delivery and financial outcomes.
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said the company remained focused on deliveries while maintaining quality standards amid a complex geopolitical and operating environment. He added that teams were working toward the company’s established objectives.
Supply Chain Delays Continue to Challenge Production
Supply-chain constraints have historically complicated Airbus’s year-end delivery targets, particularly when engine shortages and other production bottlenecks prevent completed aircraft from reaching customers on schedule.
The company said these pressures had recently begun to ease. However, Murphy cautioned that delays had slowed rather than disappeared, indicating that supply-chain performance remains an important uncertainty.
Airbus must therefore balance the need to accelerate deliveries with its stated commitment to maintaining quality. Any renewed disruption could make the final-quarter target more difficult to achieve.
Inventory Build Weighs on Cash Flow
Free cash flow before customer financing was negative €1.27 billion from January through the reported period. Airbus attributed the pressure to higher inventories as it prepared for stronger deliveries later in the year and increased production ahead of the year-end push.
The inventory build reflects the operational demands of preparing aircraft for delivery, but the negative cash-flow figure also highlights the financial impact of production timing.
Investors will be watching whether the anticipated fourth-quarter delivery surge converts the accumulated inventory into completed deliveries and improves cash generation.
Boeing Faces Similar Production Challenges
Airbus’s performance contrasts with the difficulties reported by its US rival Boeing, which highlighted production delays and supply-chain challenges on Tuesday.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the company would miss key production and aircraft-delivery targets this year.
Airbus remains ahead of Boeing in deliveries during 2026. Airbus had handed over 547 aircraft by the time of the report, compared with Boeing’s 475.
The comparison underscores Airbus’s relative delivery lead while also highlighting the wider operational challenges facing aircraft manufacturers.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The key test for Airbus is whether it can sustain production momentum and complete the deliveries required to reach approximately 870 aircraft for the year. Supply-chain reliability, engine availability and the conversion of higher inventories into customer deliveries will be important indicators.
Investors will also monitor cash flow as the year-end delivery push progresses. Airbus has retained its targets, but its final-quarter execution will determine whether the company can achieve a record annual delivery total.
