Key Points

  • U.S. Treasury investors are increasingly focused on artificial intelligence financing risks and government borrowing needs, alongside Federal Reserve policy.
  • The 10-year Treasury yield has risen approximately 84 basis points in 2026, while the 30-year yield has climbed nearly 50 basis points.
  • Persistent inflation, elevated energy prices and expanding federal deficits could keep long-term bond yields volatile even if the Fed holds rates steady.

U.S. bond markets are entering a period in which the Federal Reserve is no longer the only dominant influence on investor expectations. Concerns about the financing of artificial intelligence infrastructure, rising government debt and persistent inflation are increasingly shaping Treasury demand, with implications for global borrowing costs, equity valuations and international capital flows.

AI Investment Becomes a Bond-Market Risk Factor

The artificial intelligence boom has supported expectations for productivity gains and corporate growth, but its substantial financing requirements are attracting greater scrutiny. Data centers, computing infrastructure and energy capacity require significant capital, and an increasing reliance on borrowing can expose companies to higher refinancing costs and weaker investor appetite.

Recent concerns about financing pressures in parts of the AI infrastructure sector have coincided with a recovery in Treasury prices and a retreat in yields from their early-October highs. This suggests that some investors may be reallocating capital from riskier technology-related positions toward government bonds. However, the shift should not automatically be interpreted as a lasting return to defensive assets. If AI investment continues to expand and productivity gains materialize, the sector could sustain economic growth while also increasing demand for capital, labor and electricity.

Fiscal Pressure Could Keep Long-Term Yields Elevated

Government borrowing remains a separate structural challenge. U.S. federal debt has approached $40 trillion, while the budget deficit is estimated at around 6% of gross domestic product. Persistent deficits require continued Treasury issuance, leaving private investors to absorb substantial additional supply.

The 10-year Treasury yield has risen about 84 basis points this year, putting it on course for its largest annual increase since 2022. The 30-year yield has gained nearly 50 basis points. These moves indicate that long-term borrowing costs are being influenced by more than near-term expectations for the Fed’s policy rate. Investors are also assessing the compensation required to hold longer-duration debt amid uncertainty over inflation, fiscal sustainability and future bond supply.

Inflation and the Global Investment Outlook

A stable Fed decision would not necessarily translate into lower yields across the Treasury curve. Elevated energy prices and renewed inflation pressure could limit the scope for monetary easing, while changing expectations for future rate increases may continue to drive short-term volatility. Political uncertainty surrounding the U.S. midterm elections adds another layer of risk to the fiscal outlook.

For Israeli investors and international asset allocators, movements in U.S. Treasury yields matter because they influence global financing conditions, currency valuations and the relative appeal of government and corporate bonds. Changes in dollar interest rates can also affect the shekel, hedging costs and returns on overseas holdings.

The outlook will depend on the Fed’s guidance, incoming inflation data, Treasury issuance plans and evidence of financial strain among AI-related borrowers. A sustained decline in yields could support bond valuations, but that scenario remains vulnerable to renewed inflation, heavier borrowing or a deterioration in risk sentiment. Conversely, stronger fiscal discipline or easing price pressures could help stabilize the market. For now, the balance between monetary policy, AI financing and government debt is likely to remain central to fixed-income performance.
