Key Points

  • Cloud growth faces scrutiny: Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet are expected to report faster growth in their cloud businesses, with investors looking for evidence that AI demand can justify continued infrastructure spending.
  • Financing concerns intensify: Rising bond yields among AI cloud providers, higher costs of insuring Meta’s debt and expectations of elevated US interest rates have increased concerns about how the industry’s infrastructure expansion is being financed.
  • Spending must deliver returns: The three companies have a combined backlog of nearly $1.7 trillion and plan to spend as much as $600 billion this year, putting greater emphasis on revenue growth, profitability and free cash flow.

Earnings Put AI Investment Under the Microscope

Quarterly results from Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet are expected to provide an important test of the artificial intelligence investment cycle. Although analysts anticipate stronger cloud growth, recent market volatility has tempered expectations as investors question whether the returns from AI infrastructure will justify its cost.

The selloff has revived warnings of a potential AI bubble and contributed to delays in planned initial public offerings. Financing concerns have also intensified as borrowing costs rise for AI cloud providers such as CoreWeave and debt-insurance costs for Meta reach records.

The market reaction to Meta’s latest results illustrates the pressure facing major technology companies. Stronger-than-expected revenue growth and an upbeat outlook were overshadowed by higher spending plans, sending its shares down nearly 7% the following day.

Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet have performed better than Meta this year, with share gains ranging from 1.2% to 10.1%. However, all three have lagged the S&P 500’s approximately 12% advance.

Cloud Revenue Growth Remains Central

Cloud performance is expected to be a key indicator of whether the major technology companies can finance additional capital expenditure through operating growth.

Google Cloud is projected to lead the group, with September-quarter revenue expected to increase 95.1% to $29.57 billion, accelerating from 81.8% growth in the previous quarter.

Amazon Web Services is forecast to deliver 38.2% revenue growth, compared with 36.8% previously. Microsoft Azure is expected to expand 47.7%, up from 42% in the preceding quarter.

Despite these growth rates, cash generation remains a concern. Alphabet is expected to record a second consecutive quarter of negative cash flow, while Amazon is forecast to report a third consecutive quarter of cash outflow. Microsoft, by contrast, is expected to generate more than $8 billion in cash flow.

These differences could influence how investors assess the capacity of each company to sustain its AI investment program without increasing financial risk.

Alphabet Faces Questions Over Search and AI Competition

Alphabet’s cloud business and internally developed chips have emerged as important components of its AI strategy. However, competition from OpenAI, Anthropic and personal AI agents is raising questions about the resilience of Google’s core search business.

Search revenue growth is expected to slow to 14.7%, from 16.8% in the previous quarter. Alphabet’s total revenue is forecast to rise 25.2% to $128.18 billion.

Investors will therefore be assessing both reported performance and management commentary on the competitive impact of AI tools, as well as the expected returns from infrastructure spending.

Microsoft Introduces New Reporting Structure

Microsoft will report under a revised segment structure for the first time, combining cloud, AI and business software into a division called “Agents and Infra.” Windows, gaming and advertising will be grouped under “Devices and Consumer.”

The company will also disclose Azure’s quarterly revenue in absolute terms, providing investors with additional information beyond its previously emphasized growth rates.

Analysts expect Azure sales of $33.06 billion and total Microsoft revenue of $90.66 billion, representing growth of 16.7%. That would be slightly slower than the previous period.

Amazon’s overall revenue growth is forecast to decelerate to 12.3%, from 19.6% in the preceding quarter, adding another measure of operating momentum for investors to evaluate.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The earnings reports will test whether cloud growth is strong enough to support the next phase of AI infrastructure investment. Revenue expansion alone may not satisfy investors if capital expenditure continues to weaken free cash flow or increases reliance on external financing.

Management guidance on spending, cash generation and demand for AI services will be particularly important. Higher borrowing costs and continued market volatility could further raise the threshold for acceptable investment returns, while pressure on established businesses such as Google Search may complicate the outlook.
