Asian Markets Deliver Uneven Performance

Asian markets recorded a mixed session on October 23, 2026, with gains in mainland China, Hong Kong and South Korea offset by declines in Japan and India. The SSE Composite Index posted the strongest advance among the listed equity benchmarks, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 finished nearly unchanged.

The SSE Composite rose 0.89% to 3,690.48, gaining 32.66 points from its previous reported close of 3,713.03. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced 0.69% to 23,093.37, recovering some ground after its 0.90% decline in the previous reported session.

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index gained 0.30% to 5,550.30. Despite the increase, the benchmark remained below its October 21 close of 5,735.66, illustrating the extent of its recent volatility.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged up 0.02% to 8,795.20, marking a largely flat session.

Japan and India Remain Under Pressure

Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 0.34% to 62,693.16, extending its recent weakness. The index fell 212.26 points from its previous reported close of 62,905.42, moving further below the 63,000 level.

India’s S&P BSE SENSEX slipped 0.17% to 73,123.83, a decline of 123.83 points. The benchmark’s modest loss contrasted with the advances in mainland China, Hong Kong and South Korea.

The divergence among regional indices suggests that market performance remained uneven, with gains concentrated in selected markets rather than spread across Asia.

Currency Indicators Show Contrasting Moves

The PHLX Yen rose 0.85% to 63.79, recording the strongest percentage gain among all listed indicators. The Australian Dollar Currency Index, by contrast, fell 0.18% to 70.18.

The contrasting movements highlighted differing performance across the two currency-related indicators. Their changes were relatively modest compared with the broader movements recorded in some equity benchmarks earlier in the week.

APAC Private Equity Declines

The APAC Private Equity index fell 0.57% to 6,910.36, extending its retreat from the previous reported level of 6,927.81 on October 21. The decline contrasted with gains in the SSE Composite, Hang Seng and KOSPI.

The mixed performance across listed equities, currencies and private equity indicators reinforces the importance of examining individual market segments rather than treating Asia as a single, uniform trading environment.

Outlook

The October 23 session showed selective gains across Chinese, Hong Kong and South Korean equities, while Japanese and Indian benchmarks remained weaker. Investors may monitor whether the gains in China and Hong Kong continue and whether Japan and India stabilize after recent declines. The KOSPI’s recovery from its October 20 low also remains a point of interest, although its latest level is still below its October 21 close.
