Key Points
- Kinder Morgan approved $4.7 billion in investments across two natural gas pipeline projects, lifting its total project backlog to $14.4 billion.
- The Southeast Connector and Permian Link projects will add transportation capacity to serve power generation, data centers and growing energy markets.
- Shares gained 2.7% in extended trading after the announcement, supported by the investment plans and quarterly earnings that exceeded analysts’ expectations.
Kinder Morgan is committing $4.7 billion to two major US natural gas pipeline projects as rising electricity consumption, expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and the growth of AI data centers increase demand for energy infrastructure. The investment expands the pipeline operator’s long-term growth plans and highlights how the infrastructure required to supply the AI economy is becoming an increasingly important driver of capital spending across the energy sector.
Two Pipeline Projects Target Growing US Gas Markets
The Houston-based company approved approximately $3.1 billion for the Southeast Connector project and $1.6 billion for the Permian Link project, both structured as joint ventures. Together, the investments helped lift Kinder Morgan’s total project backlog to $14.4 billion, including a record $13.2 billion in natural gas projects.
The Southeast Connector, being developed through Southern Natural Gas, is designed to transport up to 2.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day across approximately 470 miles of new pipeline to growing markets in the southeastern United States. Operations are expected to begin in phases during the fourth quarter of 2030.
The Permian Link project will connect the Permian Basin in Texas with Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America’s Midcontinent system. Its planned capacity is approximately 2.8 billion cubic feet per day across roughly 434 miles of new pipeline, with operations targeted for the third quarter of 2030.
AI Data Centers Strengthen the Case for Gas Infrastructure
Electricity-intensive data centers are adding to demand for reliable power supplies, while LNG exporters require substantial volumes of natural gas to serve international markets. Natural gas-fired power generation can provide dispatchable electricity to complement intermittent renewable generation, making pipeline capacity strategically important as electricity demand rises.
Permian Link is expected to supply gas to power providers serving a large hyperscale data-center customer with an investment-grade credit profile. Company executives have also indicated that interest in the project extends beyond its initial major customer, suggesting that additional demand could support the use of the planned capacity.
The projects reflect a broader investment cycle in which energy infrastructure providers are responding to changing consumption patterns. However, the scale of announced demand does not eliminate execution risks: construction costs, permitting, customer commitments and the pace of data-center development will all influence the projects’ eventual economics.
Quarterly Earnings Add to Investor Interest
Kinder Morgan reported adjusted earnings of $0.35 per share for the third quarter ended September 30, beating analysts’ expectations of $0.32 per share. Its shares rose 2.7% in extended trading following the results and pipeline investment announcement.
The expanded project backlog provides investors with a clearer view of potential future growth, but a backlog is not equivalent to immediate revenue or cash flow. Both projects are scheduled to enter service in 2030, leaving several years in which financing requirements, construction schedules and regulatory approvals could affect their delivery and returns.
Investors will be watching for progress on permits, construction milestones, customer commitments and capital expenditure plans. The key question is whether sustained demand from power generation, AI infrastructure and LNG exports will translate into profitable long-term pipeline utilization without excessive cost escalation or delays. The answer will help determine how effectively Kinder Morgan converts its record project pipeline into future earnings and cash generation.
