Asian Markets Face Broad Selling Pressure

Asian markets weakened on October 20, 2026, as declines spread across major equity benchmarks in South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, India and Australia. The KOSPI Composite Index recorded the steepest loss, while the SSE Composite Index was one of only two listed indicators to finish higher.

The KOSPI fell 3.73% to 5,552.74, a decline of 215.27 points from its previous reported close of 5,768.01. The move reversed the index’s recent recovery and placed it below the 5,600 level.

The Hang Seng declined 1.32% to 23,867.74, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost 1.30% to 64,075.42. India’s S&P BSE SENSEX fell 1.17% to 73,852.90, extending its weakness from the previous session.

The broad declines indicated renewed pressure across several of the region’s largest equity markets, although the scale of losses varied.

South Korea Leads Regional Declines

South Korea’s benchmark experienced the largest percentage decline among the listed indices. The 3.73% drop followed a 1.76% advance on October 19 and reduced the KOSPI’s level to 5,552.74.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 841.28 points to 64,075.42. The decline extended the index’s pullback after its 0.62% loss in the previous reported session, leaving it further below the 65,000 threshold.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 319.09 points to 23,867.74. India’s SENSEX, meanwhile, declined 865.28 points, adding to its recent weakness after falling 1.26% on October 19.

These consecutive declines in Japan and India contrasted with the gains recorded by both benchmarks earlier in the month, highlighting the shifting direction of regional equity performance.

Australia and China Show Relative Resilience

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.33% to 8,816.90, giving back part of its previous session’s advance. Despite the pullback, the index remained above 8,800.

The SSE Composite Index edged 0.12% higher to 3,735.37, making it one of the few listed indicators to post a gain. Its increase of 4.45 points was modest compared with the losses across several other Asian equity markets.

The divergence between mainland Chinese equities and other regional benchmarks showed that selling pressure was not uniform across every market.

Currency and Private Equity Indicators

The Australian Dollar Currency Index rose 0.47% to 69.79, the strongest percentage gain among the listed indicators. Its advance contrasted with the declines across most equity benchmarks.

The PHLX Yen fell 0.30% to 63.09, while APAC Private Equity was nearly unchanged, slipping 0.01% to 6,952.83. The limited movement in private equity contrasted with the sharper declines in listed equities.

Outlook

The October 20 session left Asian markets broadly weaker, led by South Korea’s sharp decline and further losses in Japan, Hong Kong and India. Investors may monitor whether the latest selling pressure continues into subsequent sessions or gives way to stabilization. The performance of the KOSPI, the Nikkei’s position near 64,000 and the Hang Seng’s movement below 24,000 will remain important reference points for assessing the region’s near-term direction.
