Key Points

  • China installed a record 354,000 industrial robots in 2025, accounting for 59% of global installations, according to the International Federation of Robotics.
  • Domestic manufacturers are challenging established Japanese, European and American suppliers, supported by a vast manufacturing base and growing local demand.
  • The next competitive frontier includes humanoid robots, AI-powered automation and advanced components, although commercial scalability and profitability remain key challenges.

China is strengthening its position in the global robotics industry, combining manufacturing scale, domestic technology development and government-backed industrial modernization to reshape competition. Its advantage extends beyond the number of robots installed: Chinese companies are increasingly supplying their own market and developing technologies intended for wider international adoption. For investors, the shift raises important questions about supply-chain control, industrial productivity and which companies will capture value as automation expands.

China’s Manufacturing Scale Gives It a Structural Advantage

China’s industrial robot installations reached 354,000 units in 2025, a 20% increase from the previous year and approximately 59% of the global total, according to the International Federation of Robotics. Worldwide installations reached 603,000 units, while the global operational stock exceeded 5 million robots. These figures underline China’s central role in the industry’s expansion.

The country benefits from an unusually large domestic market, with demand spanning electronics, automotive production, metalworking and machinery. This scale allows manufacturers to deploy equipment, gather operational experience and refine products in demanding industrial environments. Local suppliers can also benefit from established component networks and proximity to major customers.

Chinese manufacturers accounted for 55% of domestic industrial robot installations in 2025, down from 57% in 2024 but still well above their share a decade earlier. The change shows that domestic suppliers have become major competitors, although foreign manufacturers continue to serve a substantial portion of the market.

From Industrial Automation to Humanoid Robots

China’s ambitions increasingly extend beyond conventional factory robots. Companies are investing in humanoid machines, AI-driven control systems, machine vision and the actuators and sensors that enable robots to interact with their surroundings. These technologies could eventually expand automation into warehouses, logistics, commercial services and other environments that are less structured than traditional production lines.

Recent developments illustrate the pace of experimentation. Shenzhen-based DexForce has been using synthetic data generated in virtual simulations to train humanoid robots, aiming to reduce the cost and time required to teach machines new tasks. Meanwhile, Chinese technology company Hesai has introduced spatial-mapping technology designed to help robots interpret their physical environments.

However, demonstrations and pilot deployments do not yet establish that humanoid robots can operate reliably and profitably at scale. Manufacturers must still overcome challenges involving dexterity, safety, battery life, maintenance and the cost of deployment.

Global Competitors Face Strategic and Financial Pressure

China’s growing influence presents a challenge for established robotics suppliers in Japan, Germany, the United States and elsewhere. Competitors face pressure to improve performance, lower costs and develop more flexible systems as Chinese companies expand their capabilities. Customers may benefit from greater competition, but established manufacturers could face pricing pressure and changing market shares.

For investors, the distinction between market growth and corporate profitability is particularly important. Rising installations do not automatically translate into higher margins, especially if companies compete aggressively on price or spend heavily on research and development. Access to advanced semiconductors, software expertise, intellectual property and international distribution will also influence which businesses can sustain their positions.

The industry carries geopolitical risks as well. Export controls, trade restrictions and efforts to secure critical supply chains could affect technology transfers and market access, potentially dividing the global robotics market into more distinct regional ecosystems.

What Comes Next for the Robotics Industry?

The next phase will depend on whether Chinese companies can turn manufacturing scale into durable technological leadership and profitable international growth. Investors will be watching commercial adoption of humanoid robots, advances in AI, component costs and the financial performance of both established suppliers and emerging challengers. China has established a formidable position in industrial robotics, but maintaining that lead will require more than producing machines in greater numbers: reliability, software capabilities and sustainable economics will determine who ultimately captures the industry’s long-term value.
