NYSE Broadens Access to Extended-Hours Options

The New York Stock Exchange, owned and operated by Intercontinental Exchange, has introduced extended-hours options trading as exchanges respond to growing demand for access beyond traditional market sessions.

The new sessions began Monday, October 19, allowing investors to trade options from 7:30 a.m. to 9:25 a.m. Eastern Time before the regular market opens, as well as from 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. after the regular session closes.

The offering covers 29 major stocks and funds, including Nvidia, Bank of America, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF. The expansion follows Cboe’s announcement that it plans to introduce extended trading for options on 25 individual stocks and five exchange-traded funds.

NYSE also plans to expand access further on December 6, 2026, when trading in the same securities is scheduled to extend to 23 hours a day, five days a week.

Kevin Tyrrell, NYSE’s chief product officer, said the initiative reflects changes in market demand and continued investment in exchange technology. He also highlighted the potential importance of providing investment opportunities and risk-management tools over a longer trading window.

Competition Intensifies for Extended-Hours Trading

The expansion reflects a broader shift toward markets that operate outside conventional trading hours. As investors seek greater flexibility to respond to corporate announcements, economic releases and global developments, exchanges are evaluating ways to extend access to listed derivatives.

Options provide investors with tools for managing exposure and expressing market views, but trading outside regular hours can involve different liquidity conditions and potentially wider bid-ask spreads. The availability of extended sessions therefore does not necessarily guarantee that investors will be able to execute trades at the prices or volumes available during the main session.

The trend also coincides with growing interest in financial products that operate continuously. Cryptocurrency markets established a model for around-the-clock trading, while prediction markets and perpetual futures have expanded the range of instruments available outside traditional exchange schedules.

For established exchanges, extending options hours offers a way to respond to this competition while maintaining regulated trading infrastructure and established market mechanisms.

Record Cboe Activity Highlights Growing Interest

Cboe data indicate that demand for extended-hours options trading has increased significantly. Average daily volume recently exceeded 199,000 contracts, reaching a record level after sustained growth and a sharp increase in activity during the year.

Initial NYSE activity, however, was relatively muted during Monday’s first extended session for stocks. Tesla options stood out ahead of the company’s earnings report scheduled for Wednesday.

According to SpotGamma data, slightly more than 3,000 Tesla options contracts traded, with almost all involving calls. The reported total value was below $100,000, and the activity was considered consistent with traders potentially rolling existing positions.

The early figures suggest that participation may vary considerably by security and event. While the broader market is showing increased interest in extended trading, individual products may take time to develop sustained liquidity.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The next milestone is NYSE’s planned expansion to 23-hour trading in December. Market participants will be watching whether the longer schedule attracts consistent volume across the 29 eligible stocks and funds, or whether activity remains concentrated in highly traded securities and around major corporate events.

Competition between exchanges will also be important as Cboe and NYSE develop their offerings. The longer-term significance will depend not only on trading availability but also on liquidity, execution quality and the practical usefulness of extended-hours options for investors seeking to manage risk outside regular market hours.
