Tel Aviv Market Pulls Back After Friday’s Rally

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange opened the week with a broad decline on Monday, October 19, as the leading equity benchmarks retreated following Friday’s strong advance. The TA-35 fell 0.45% to 4,205.72, while the TA-125 declined 0.47% to 4,072.11. The TA-90 also moved lower, losing 0.30% to close at 3,685.12.

The retreat followed gains of more than 1.5% across the three benchmarks on October 16. Monday’s session reversed part of that advance, although the main indices remained above their levels earlier in the week.

The TA-20 declined 0.32% to 4,011.63, leaving it just above the 4,000-point threshold. The broader performance suggests that selling pressure was not confined to the largest listed companies, with all eight reported index groups closing lower.

Small-Cap and Broader Indices Face Greater Pressure

The TA-SME60 recorded the steepest decline among the reported indices, falling 0.91% to 1,271.24. The TA-125 lost 0.47%, while the TA-35 declined 0.45%. The TA-200 fell 0.39% to 3,898.71, and the Sector-Balance index dropped 0.34% to 4,639.38.

The TA-90 and Banks index decreased 0.23% to 3,936.33, while the TA-90 itself fell 0.30%. These declines indicate that weakness extended across both banking-related shares and other market segments.

Market breadth confirmed the broad nature of the pullback. The TA-125 recorded 45 advancing securities against 78 declining securities. Within the TA-90, 32 securities rose while 55 fell. The TA-200 registered 69 gainers and 125 decliners, while the TA-SME60 recorded 21 advancing securities against 38 declining securities.

The imbalance between advancing and declining securities indicates that Monday’s weakness extended beyond a handful of large stocks. The particularly negative breadth in the TA-200 and SME60 suggests that smaller and broader-market shares faced greater pressure.

Stock Turnover Reaches NIS 3.55 Billion

Stock turnover totaled approximately NIS 3.55 billion, while bond turnover reached around NIS 4.69 billion. The TA-125 recorded turnover of approximately NIS 2.68 billion, followed by the TA-200 at around NIS 2.74 billion. Turnover in the TA-35 reached approximately NIS 1.99 billion.

The figures show that trading remained active as the market declined. However, turnover alone does not establish whether investors were reducing overall exposure, rotating between sectors, or responding to specific company developments.

The combination of negative index performance and declining-stock dominance will be important to monitor in subsequent sessions. A recovery accompanied by improving breadth could indicate that Monday’s pullback was temporary, while continued weakness across a wide range of securities could point to more persistent selling pressure.

Arit Industries Advances as Doral Energy Falls

Individual stocks moved sharply in opposite directions despite the broader decline. Arit Industries rose 9.52% to 1,518, making it the strongest performer among the notable TA-125 fluctuations reported for the session. Doral Energy fell 6.86% to 4,890, recording the steepest decline among the highlighted stocks.

Elbit Systems also attracted notable trading activity, with turnover of approximately NIS 213.25 million. The supplied figures do not establish the reasons behind the individual price movements, and further company disclosures would be needed to identify their underlying catalysts.

The contrasting performance of Arit Industries and Doral Energy illustrates how stock-specific developments can diverge from the broader market trend. In a session characterized by widespread declines, individual gainers may reflect company-specific factors rather than a recovery in overall investor sentiment.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The next session will test whether the TA-35 can maintain its position above 4,200 and whether the TA-125 can hold above 4,070. Investors will also be watching the TA-90 near 3,685 and the TA-SME60 after its sharper decline. Improving market breadth, particularly a narrowing gap between advancing and declining securities, could signal stabilization. Conversely, continued declines across the TA-200 and smaller-company shares could indicate that selling pressure remains broad. Trading turnover and the performance of banking-related shares will provide additional clues about whether the market can regain momentum after Monday’s retreat.
