Key Points

  • Volatility Expected: Options markets are pricing in a potential 6% swing in Meta's stock price following its third-quarter earnings release on October 21.
  • An "Illusory" Earnings Jump: While analysts expect a dramatic year-over-year jump in earnings per share compared to last year's $1.05, the historical figure was heavily distorted by a massive $15.9 billion one-time tax charge.
  • The Cash Flow Challenge: While the core advertising business remains robust, massive capital expenditures on artificial intelligence (a $130-$145 billion budget for 2026) threaten to significantly erode free cash flow.

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is set to release its third-quarter financial results for 2026 after the closing bell on Wednesday, October 21. Trading around the $743 mark, the stock has rallied roughly 30% since late August and sits just 6% below its all-time high of $790 set in August 2025. Based on current options pricing, traders are bracing for a sharp 6% move in either direction following the report—a swing that could propel shares up to the $754 range or drag them below $660.

Market Expectations: Stock Volatility and Analyst Consensus

Heading into the earnings report, the analyst community remains overwhelmingly bullish on the Facebook and Instagram parent company. Out of 19 analysts tracked by Visible Alpha, 18 recommend buying the stock, with only one holding a neutral rating. The average price target stands at $878, implying a potential upside of nearly 25%. This optimism is partly fueled by early signs of success with the company’s new AI agent, Muse AI, which analysts believe could mark the beginning of a rich product cycle that translates heavy tech investments into tangible returns.

The EPS Illusion: Factoring in 2025’s Massive Tax Bill

At first glance, Meta’s bottom line is expected to look phenomenal. Analysts (via FactSet) are projecting Q3 earnings of between $5.60 and $6.77 per share, a staggering jump from the $1.05 reported in the same quarter last year. However, this headline leap requires context, as the historical figure was heavily skewed by a one-time, non-cash income tax charge of $15.9 billion.

Without that charge, Meta’s diluted earnings per share last year would have been $7.25. This means the current $6.77 estimate actually represents a roughly 7% decline in adjusted profitability. This dip reflects a sharp increase in operating expenses and infrastructure investments, combined with a higher expected tax rate (15%-17% compared to the normalized 14% last year).

The Ad Engine: Can Revenue Cover the AI Build-Out?

The key to justifying Meta’s valuation lies in its ability to maintain double-digit growth in its core digital advertising business. Ad revenue surged 33% in the first quarter of 2026 and followed up with 27% growth in the second quarter (reaching $59.4 billion). Management’s guidance for the third quarter anticipates total revenue between $61 billion and $64 billion, representing a slight deceleration to a 19% to 25% growth rate.

The primary catalyst for this growth is the integration of AI into its advertising systems. In the previous quarter, AI upgrades led to an 8% boost in ad clicks and a 16% increase in conversion rates on Facebook. This improved performance allowed Meta to charge a premium, with the average price per ad rising 12%. Maintaining a double-digit increase in ad pricing in Q3 will be a critical indicator that marketers are willing to pay more for AI-driven algorithms that deliver higher ROI.

Free Cash Flow and the Outlook for 2027

Looming over the robust ad revenue is the company’s ballooning expense sheet. Meta updated its capital expenditure (Capex) range for 2026 to $130 billion to $145 billion—a massive jump from $72.2 billion in 2025. Having spent $50.9 billion in the first half of the year, the company is on track for a blistering spend rate of roughly $40 billion per quarter in the second half.

These aggressive investments are already impacting liquidity. Meta’s free cash flow plummeted to just $784 million in the second quarter (down from $8.5 billion a year prior), and its long-term debt swelled to $83.7 billion by the end of June. There is a real possibility that third-quarter free cash flow could slip into negative territory. Investors will be hyper-focused on any hints regarding the 2027 Capex budget. The most disappointing scenario for Wall Street would be the announcement of an even more massive spending plan for 2027 coupled with ad revenue growth decelerating below 20%. As long as revenue growth remains resilient enough to fund the AI infrastructure build-out, most analysts still view a forward P/E multiple of roughly 22 as reasonable.
