Key Points
- AI Trading Requires Guardrails: Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster says AI agents should trade on behalf of investors only under clearly defined rules, with human supervision and an established investment process.
- Schwab’s AI Assistant Will Start With Administrative Tasks: The company’s upcoming Charley assistant will initially handle selected account-related actions rather than operate as an autonomous trading bot.
- Strong Growth Meets Funding Pressures: Schwab reported 29% growth in adjusted earnings and record quarterly revenue, while softer guidance and a net interest income shortfall raised concerns about its near-term outlook.
Schwab CEO Calls for Clear Limits on AI Trading
The growing use of artificial intelligence in financial services is raising questions about how much authority investors should give automated systems. Charles Schwab CEO Rick Wurster supports the potential for AI-driven trading but argues that investors must establish clear boundaries before allowing an agent to act on their behalf.
Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Wurster said AI agents should operate within a defined framework developed by the investor. He compared the process with traditional online brokerage activity, in which clients research investments, select securities and place orders according to their own decisions.
Wurster cautioned against giving an AI system unrestricted authority to buy and sell stocks without a specified methodology or oversight. In his view, investors should communicate their investment approach, establish rules and supervise the agent’s activity rather than surrender control of their portfolios.
His comments reflect a distinction between using AI to support investment decisions and delegating discretionary trading authority to an automated system.
Schwab’s Charley Assistant Will Begin With Administrative Functions
Charles Schwab is preparing to introduce Charley, an AI-powered conversational assistant designed to help clients interact with the brokerage platform. The initial version will not function as an autonomous trading bot.
Instead, Charley will be able to perform selected administrative tasks on clients’ behalf, including changing an account address or naming a trusted contact. Over time, Schwab envisions the assistant becoming a primary access point for navigating its services.
The planned rollout illustrates a more limited approach to AI integration, with the company initially focusing on account management rather than independent investment execution.
As financial institutions develop increasingly capable AI tools, the distinction between administrative assistance, investment research and autonomous trading is likely to remain important for questions of investor control and operational risk.
Record Revenue and Asset Inflows Support Schwab’s Results
Schwab delivered a strong third quarter, supported by higher trading activity, new client assets and increased interest income.
Adjusted earnings rose 29% year over year to $1.69 per share, exceeding analyst expectations. Revenue increased 17% to a record $7.17 billion, although it came in slightly below market estimates.
Core net new assets reached a record $190.4 billion, representing a 38% increase from the previous year. Daily average trading volume climbed 44% to 10.7 million trades, while net interest revenue rose 14% to $3.48 billion.
The results highlight continued client engagement and asset growth. However, stronger trading activity and revenue did not eliminate concerns about the company’s near-term financial outlook.
Expense Guidance and Net Interest Income Raise Concerns
Schwab said its full-year revenue and expense growth would be toward the lower ends of its previously stated ranges. Revenue growth was projected within a range of 17.5% to 18.5%, while expense growth was expected to fall within a range of 9.5% to 10.5%.
Evercore ISI analyst Glenn Schorr said the earnings beat, driven partly by expenses, was overshadowed by a net interest income shortfall and softer full-year guidance.
Schorr also highlighted record net new assets and healthy client lending demand, while warning that slower client cash growth was increasing the company’s reliance on higher-cost wholesale funding and putting pressure on the near-term net interest margin outlook.
These factors suggest that Schwab’s ability to convert client growth into sustainable earnings will remain a key consideration for investors.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Schwab’s next phase of development will involve balancing its investment in AI capabilities with the need to maintain clear controls over how automated systems interact with client accounts. Charley’s initial functionality will provide an early indication of how the company intends to integrate conversational AI into its brokerage services.
For investors assessing Schwab’s financial performance, asset inflows and trading volumes will remain important indicators of business momentum. Net interest income, client cash balances, funding costs and updated financial guidance will also be central to evaluating earnings sustainability.
More broadly, Wurster’s comments point to a measured approach to AI in investing: automation may expand access to financial services, but its role in executing investment decisions will depend on clearly defined authority and meaningful human oversight.
