Asian equity markets staged a broad recovery on October 16, 2026, as investors responded to the previous session’s steep losses across South Korea and Japan. The KOSPI led the advance, followed by the Nikkei 225 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200. Gains also extended to Hong Kong, India and mainland China, although the rebound came alongside continued weakness in the Australian Dollar Currency Index and APAC Private Equity indicator.

South Korea Leads the Recovery

The KOSPI Composite Index rose 2.05% to 5,668.05, recovering part of the ground lost during its 7.57% plunge on October 15. Despite the rebound, the benchmark remained well below 6,000, underscoring the extent of the recent selloff.

The latest gain provides an initial sign of stabilization after consecutive sharp declines pushed the index toward 5,500. However, the recovery remains partial, and the 5,700 level is an immediate reference point as investors assess whether buying interest can persist.

Japan Reclaims Ground Above 65,000

The Nikkei 225 advanced 1.39% to 65,324.29, recovering above 65,000 after dropping 4.90% to 64,425.95 in the previous reported session. The rebound helped offset some of the recent selling pressure but left the index significantly below its earlier position near 70,000.

The PHLX Yen strengthened 0.22% to 63.30, providing a modest currency gain alongside the equity recovery. The combination of rising Japanese equities and a firmer yen marked a more constructive session for the reported Japanese market indicators.

Australia Returns Above 8,800

The S&P/ASX 200 gained 1.00% to 8,806.70, moving back above the 8,800 threshold and recording one of the strongest advances among the reported equity benchmarks. The gain followed a modest decline in the previous session and brought the index closer to its recent trading range.

The Australian Dollar Currency Index moved in the opposite direction, falling 0.74% to 69.20. The divergence between equities and the currency indicator highlights the uneven nature of the recovery and suggests that improved stock-market performance did not extend across all Australian-related indicators.

Hong Kong, India and China Advance

The Hang Seng rose 0.52% to 24,186.83, remaining above 24,000 after recent volatility. India’s S&P BSE SENSEX added 0.42% to 74,624.77, extending its recovery above 74,000 and maintaining its relative strength compared with several regional peers.

The SSE Composite Index gained 0.24% to 3,716.28, recovering modestly after falling 1.59% on October 15. The index nevertheless remained below 3,800, leaving mainland Chinese equities in a weaker technical position than earlier in the month.

APAC Private Equity Remains Under Pressure

APAC Private Equity declined 0.94% to 6,924.52, making it the weakest-performing reported indicator on the day. Its decline contrasted with the gains across all six listed equity benchmarks, showing that the recovery was not shared by every segment of the regional market.

Thailand’s Stock Exchange was closed for an additional holiday, according to the supplied market note.

Outlook

The October 16 session offers signs of a regional rebound, led by South Korea’s recovery and gains in Japan and Australia. The KOSPI remains below 5,700, the Nikkei has reclaimed 65,000 and the ASX 200 is back above 8,800. The Hang Seng remains above 24,000, while the Sensex continues to trade above 74,000 and the SSE Composite is attempting to stabilize above 3,700. Investors will be watching whether the rebound can extend into the next session or whether the latest gains represent only a partial recovery from the sharp losses recorded earlier in the week. Continued weakness in the Australian Dollar Currency Index and APAC Private Equity remains a counterpoint to the stronger equity performance.
