  • Japan's Nikkei 225 tumbled 4.90% to 64,425.95, while China's SSE Composite Index fell 1.59% to 3,707.48 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.03% to 24,062.72.

Asian markets experienced a sharp divergence on October 15, 2026, as severe losses in South Korea and Japan contrasted with a strong advance in India. The KOSPI recorded the largest decline among the reported benchmarks, while the Nikkei suffered a steep retreat that pushed it further below 65,000. Mainland China and Hong Kong also finished lower, extending the cautious tone across much of the region.

South Korea Leads the Selloff

The KOSPI Composite Index plunged 7.57% to 5,554.22, falling sharply from its previous reported close of 6,008.81 on October 14. The decline pushed the benchmark decisively below the 6,000 threshold and extended its recent sequence of losses.

The scale of the move marks a significant deterioration in South Korean equities. The index has moved from near 7,000 earlier in October to the mid-5,000s, putting the 5,500 level in focus as investors assess whether selling pressure will continue or a stabilization phase will emerge.

Japan’s Nikkei Suffers Heavy Losses

The Nikkei 225 dropped 4.90% to 64,425.95, falling below 65,000 after closing at 67,744.29 in the previous reported session. The sharp decline reversed further ground following the index’s recent retreat from the 70,000 level.

The size of the loss placed Japan among the weakest major markets in the region. The PHLX Yen was nearly unchanged, edging up just 0.01% to 63.16, suggesting that the currency indicator showed little movement despite the substantial equity-market decline.

China and Hong Kong Extend Weakness

The SSE Composite Index fell 1.59% to 3,707.48, moving further below 3,800 and extending its recent decline from 3,767.23 on October 14. The latest move brought the benchmark closer to 3,700, an important psychological reference point for the next session.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 1.03% to 24,062.72. Although it remained just above 24,000, the loss added to the weakness across regional equities and reduced the benchmark’s buffer above that level.

The simultaneous declines in mainland China and Hong Kong indicated that the pressure extended beyond the sharp selloffs in South Korea and Japan.

India Outperforms as Australia Remains Stable

India’s S&P BSE SENSEX advanced 1.76% to 74,063.85, emerging as the strongest-performing equity benchmark in the supplied data. The index moved back above 74,000, extending its recovery after closing at 72,815.61 on October 14.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.09% to 8,719.70, remaining relatively stable compared with the sharp declines elsewhere. The Australian Dollar Currency Index fell 0.15% to 69.71, while APAC Private Equity declined 0.10% to 6,990.25.

Outlook

The October 15 session leaves Asian markets facing heightened uncertainty, with South Korea and Japan experiencing the most severe losses. The KOSPI’s fall toward 5,500 and the Nikkei’s move below 65,000 place those levels in focus, while the SSE Composite is approaching 3,700 and the Hang Seng remains close to 24,000. India’s advance above 74,000 offers a contrasting signal, and Australia’s limited decline suggests comparatively stable trading. Investors will be watching for signs of stabilization in the hardest-hit markets and whether India’s relative strength can persist amid continued regional volatility.
