Netflix Announces Approximately 1,000 Job Cuts

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it plans to lay off roughly 1,000 employees, representing approximately 6% of its workforce, according to a company memo obtained by CNBC. The reductions will primarily affect teams in product development, technology, human resources and legal operations.

In a message to employees, co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said the company needed to make disciplined decisions about how it allocates its workforce and resources. They emphasized that Netflix’s business remained strong and growing, adding that the company was still on track to meet its full-year financial forecast.

The executives also said Netflix would continue investing in areas expected to have a significant impact on its service, growth and innovation. The planned cuts therefore reflect a more focused approach to staffing and resource allocation rather than an announced abandonment of its broader expansion strategy.

Netflix declined to provide additional comments beyond the executives’ memo.

Growth Challenges Persist Despite Strong Financial Performance

The layoffs come as Netflix faces questions about the pace of its growth. At the Bloomberg Screentime conference on October 1, Sarandos said the company was not growing as quickly as he wanted.

Netflix continues to generate solid profits and remains a leading player in streaming. However, the source report identifies stagnating viewing time as a challenge, while subscriber acquisition has relied heavily on the company’s password-sharing crackdown and the introduction of a lower-priced, advertising-supported subscription tier.

These developments highlight the distinction between maintaining profitability and sustaining growth. Netflix must continue attracting new subscribers and increasing engagement while ensuring that its content investments translate into stronger audience demand.

The company’s upcoming earnings report could provide additional information about its performance and priorities as it addresses these challenges.

Competition for Viewer Attention Intensifies

Netflix faces competition from established platforms and emerging rivals. YouTube has become a major competitive concern, while a proposed combination of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery could create additional pressure if their streaming services, Paramount+ and HBO Max, are integrated as planned.

The competitive environment has encouraged Netflix to diversify its programming. In recent years, the company has expanded into live sports, documentaries and video games in an effort to capture more of consumers’ time and attention.

However, the report notes that Netflix has lacked recent breakout hits comparable to Stranger Things and Squid Game, which previously helped drive subscriber growth and viewing activity.

Maintaining a steady pipeline of popular content will remain important as consumers choose among an expanding range of entertainment options.

Media Industry Cost Cuts Extend Beyond Netflix

Netflix’s planned reductions reflect a broader effort to manage costs across the media industry. In September, Disney announced that it would eliminate approximately 300 jobs, with most of the cuts affecting human resources and technology roles.

The parallel announcements illustrate how major entertainment companies are reassessing staffing and operational priorities while competing for audiences and investing in digital services.

For Netflix, the central challenge will be balancing efficiency with the creative, technological and commercial investments required to sustain its competitive position.

Investors Await Netflix’s Earnings Report

Netflix is scheduled to release quarterly earnings on October 20. Investors will be watching for updates on financial performance, growth expectations and the company’s plans to strengthen engagement and subscriber acquisition.

The results may also offer further insight into how management intends to balance workforce reductions with continued investment in content and product development. The effectiveness of that approach will be important in determining whether Netflix can maintain profitability while restoring stronger growth momentum.
