Key Points

  • Brent crude settled at $105.69 a barrel, falling 0.9%, while U.S. WTI rose 0.4% to $94.14.
  • Expectations that a U.S.-Russia diesel agreement could increase available supplies offset concerns about potential disruptions following attacks in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
  • OPEC reported sharply higher September OPEC+ output while trimming its 2026 demand-growth outlook again and raising expectations for inventory rebuilding next year.

Oil prices finished mixed on Tuesday as markets weighed the prospect of additional Russian diesel supplies against renewed geopolitical risks in the Gulf. The competing forces left Brent under pressure after reaching its highest settlement since September 15, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude reached its strongest closing level since September 24.

Brent and WTI Diverge

Brent futures settled at $105.69 per barrel, down 96 cents, or 0.9%, from Monday. In contrast, U.S. WTI crude futures rose 40 cents, or 0.4%, to $94.14 per barrel. The divergence reflects differences in how the two benchmarks are responding to developments in global supply expectations and regional geopolitical risks.

Brent had reached a recent high on Monday, meaning Tuesday’s decline represented some consolidation after a strong move higher. WTI, meanwhile, continued to advance and closed at its highest level since September 24. The contrasting performance demonstrates the uncertainty surrounding the balance between expected additional supply and the possibility of new disruptions.

Russia Diesel Deal Counters Supply Concerns

One of the main factors limiting the oil market’s upside was the prospect that a U.S.-Russia diesel agreement could help make more fuel available from Moscow. The Kremlin said the diesel export arrangement has no direct link to Ukraine peace talks, separating the energy arrangement from broader diplomatic discussions.

Additional Russian supplies could ease some pressure in global fuel markets if they materialize at the expected scale. However, the potential increase in supply is being weighed against geopolitical developments involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen, where attacks have raised concerns about the security of energy infrastructure and transportation routes.

OPEC Signals Changing Supply and Demand Balance

OPEC reported that OPEC+ September production rose sharply, driven in part by higher Saudi output. Rising production could provide additional supply to the market, although geopolitical risks remain capable of offsetting some of the impact of higher production.

At the same time, OPEC trimmed its 2026 oil-demand growth forecast again while increasing its outlook for inventory rebuilding next year. The combination points to a more balanced supply-and-demand picture over the longer term, although short-term prices remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments and actual supply flows.

Geopolitics Remains Central to Oil Outlook

The energy market is therefore navigating two competing narratives: expectations of improved supply and the risk of disruptions linked to escalating regional tensions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also said Kyiv receives no warning of Russian missile strikes, underscoring the continuing uncertainty surrounding the broader geopolitical environment.

For investors, the next signals will come from Russian diesel exports, OPEC+ production and developments around Saudi Arabia and Yemen. If additional supplies reach global markets as anticipated, they could moderate some price pressure. However, further attacks affecting production, infrastructure or shipping could quickly reverse that effect, leaving geopolitical risk as a central variable in the direction of crude prices.
