LVMH Results Raise Questions About a Luxury-Sector Recovery

LVMH’s third-quarter trading update has renewed concerns about the recovery prospects of the global luxury goods industry, as weaker demand for fashion and leather products offset modest growth across the group. The world’s largest luxury company reported organic sales growth of 1% to €18.5 billion, missing the 1.3% increase expected by analysts, according to Visible Alpha consensus estimates.

The results are significant because LVMH is among the first major luxury groups to report quarterly performance, making its figures an early indicator of conditions across the sector. The luxury industry has struggled with a prolonged slowdown, and the latest numbers suggest that consumer demand remains uneven across key markets.

LVMH’s U.S.-listed shares fell nearly 3% following the announcement. The reaction highlights investor sensitivity to signs that the sector’s recovery may be taking longer than anticipated. For luxury companies, modest overall revenue growth may offer limited reassurance when their most important business divisions continue to experience declining sales.

Fashion and Leather Goods Face Deeper Pressure

The clearest weakness came from LVMH’s fashion and leather goods division, which generates nearly half of the group’s revenue and includes major brands such as Louis Vuitton and Dior. Organic sales in the division declined 5%, significantly underperforming analysts’ expectations for a 1.8% contraction.

Because of its size, the division plays a central role in determining LVMH’s overall growth and profitability. A prolonged decline in this segment could weigh on group performance even if other businesses provide some support. The figures also raise questions about whether established luxury brands can maintain pricing power and demand while consumers become more cautious about discretionary spending.

The company faces additional brand-specific challenges in China. Louis Vuitton encountered criticism on Chinese social media over a copyright dispute involving tea chain Molly Tea, whose logo reportedly resembled the floral motif used in the luxury brand’s signature monogram handbags. Although the broader sales decline cannot be attributed to this dispute alone, brand perception remains an important consideration in a market where consumer sentiment is weakening.

China Weakness Contrasts With U.S. Growth

Regional results underscored the uneven nature of luxury demand. LVMH’s Asian sales, with China representing a major market, declined 5% year over year. Chief Financial Officer Cécile Cabanis attributed the weakness to a sharp deterioration in Chinese consumer sentiment, which affected discretionary spending.

China’s tax crackdown on wealthy individuals has added another challenge for luxury brands already dealing with geopolitical uncertainty and slower consumer spending in the United States. These pressures could make demand recovery more difficult to predict, particularly for companies heavily exposed to premium fashion and accessories.

By contrast, U.S. sales increased 5%, providing a source of relative strength. However, one region’s growth may not fully offset weakness in Asia when a company depends on global demand across multiple product categories.

European luxury groups have also faced substantial market-value losses. According to the supplied report, the sector’s leading companies have collectively lost approximately €330 billion in market value since the beginning of the year, while LVMH’s value has fallen around 40%.
