Microsoft is accelerating its push to bring artificial intelligence directly onto personal computers, positioning Windows against Apple’s growing focus on on-device AI. At a San Francisco event, the company unveiled new AI software, security technology and a high-powered Surface laptop, highlighting an industry-wide shift toward computers capable of running increasingly sophisticated AI workloads locally.

Microsoft Moves AI Processing Closer to the User

Microsoft unveiled an AI coding model that can run directly on personal computers, marking a further step in its effort to reduce reliance on cloud-based computing for certain AI applications. The company is also developing security technology designed to prevent AI agents from accessing data without permission, addressing one of the central challenges created by software that can independently perform tasks on behalf of users.

The strategy is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to turn Windows into a platform for AI agents. These systems are intended to handle tasks ranging from writing computer code to managing complex business projects, potentially changing how users interact with personal computers and enterprise software.

Surface Ultra Targets the Next Generation of AI PCs

Microsoft also presented a high-powered Surface laptop called Ultra, equipped with Nvidia’s RTX Spark chips. The hardware is designed to provide the computing capacity needed for demanding AI applications directly on the device, reflecting the growing importance of specialized processors in the PC market.

The partnership with Nvidia gives Microsoft access to technology designed for intensive AI workloads while strengthening the connection between Windows devices and the broader AI hardware ecosystem. For Nvidia, the expansion of AI-capable PCs provides another potential market beyond the large data centers that have driven much of the company’s recent AI-related demand.

Pricing Could Determine How Quickly AI PCs Scale

The main commercial question is likely to be the cost of these increasingly powerful machines. Analysts cited in the Reuters report said pricing is a significant concern as a memory crunch pushes up the cost of desktops and laptops.

The pricing pressure is already visible in AI hardware. Nvidia has raised the price of its DGX Spark AI desktop by approximately 75% since its launch, bringing the price to $6,950. Higher component costs could make advanced AI PCs less accessible to consumers and businesses, potentially slowing adoption even as demand for local AI capabilities increases.

Microsoft and Apple Face a New AI Competition

Microsoft’s strategy puts it in direct competition with Apple over the future role of AI on personal devices. While cloud computing remains central to many advanced AI applications, running models locally can offer potential advantages around responsiveness, privacy and access to computing resources without continuous cloud connectivity.

The next phase of the PC market will therefore depend on whether manufacturers can deliver meaningful AI capabilities at prices that consumers and businesses are willing to pay. Investors will be watching the adoption of AI-enabled Windows devices, the evolution of component costs and the ability of Microsoft and its hardware partners to translate AI functionality into sustained demand across the global PC market.
