GM Sales Decline as EV Demand Weakens

General Motors reported a 5.5% year-over-year decline in U.S. vehicle sales during the third quarter, delivering 670,974 vehicles as the automaker faced a sharp pullback in demand for several electric models. The results highlight a shifting U.S. automotive market in which consumers appear increasingly interested in electrified vehicles but are not necessarily moving directly from gasoline-powered cars to fully electric models. For GM, that transition creates a strategic challenge because the company has invested heavily in EVs while maintaining a relatively limited hybrid offering.

GM’s EV Portfolio Faces Difficult Comparisons

GM’s electric vehicle sales declined substantially across several models during the quarter. Equinox EV sales fell 92.4% to 1,905 units, while Blazer EV deliveries declined 84.4% and Hummer EV sales dropped 72.9%. The comparisons were particularly difficult because EV demand had surged during the same period last year ahead of the expiration of federal consumer incentives for electric vehicles.

At the same time, GM continues to depend heavily on trucks and SUVs, making fuel prices an additional consideration for consumers. With the national gasoline average cited at $4.41, demand for larger vehicles could face additional pressure. Full-size pickup sales were relatively flat, while lower-priced models provided a more positive signal, including a 51% increase for the Chevrolet Trailblazer and an 18.4% gain for the Buick Envista.

Toyota Benefits From a Broader Electrification Strategy

Toyota’s third-quarter results illustrate the advantage of offering consumers multiple forms of electrification. The Japanese automaker sold 633,223 vehicles, up 0.6% year over year, while electrified vehicle sales, including hybrids, increased 28.5% to 363,367 units. Those vehicles represented more than 57% of Toyota’s quarterly sales, according to the company.

The contrast with GM is increasingly significant. GM offers only one hybrid vehicle, the Corvette, while Toyota and Honda have built broader hybrid portfolios. Honda reported a 9.3% increase in third-quarter U.S. sales, with hybrid deliveries exceeding 106,000 units. Strong hybrid demand suggests that consumers may be seeking a middle ground between traditional gasoline vehicles and fully electric models, particularly while fuel prices remain elevated.

The U.S. Sales Race Is Tightening

Toyota’s sales momentum has materially narrowed its gap with GM. The difference between the two companies is now less than 136,000 vehicles, compared with roughly 335,000 for the full year last year. If the current sales pattern persists, Toyota’s growing electrified-vehicle mix could become an increasingly important factor in the U.S. market leadership contest.

For GM, the next phase will depend on whether its new vehicle launches, pickup strategy and investments in technology can offset weakness in its current EV portfolio. Management says next-generation full-size pickups remain on schedule, while new V-8 engines are intended to reinforce the company’s position in the truck market. Investors will be watching whether those investments can stabilize volumes while GM determines how aggressively to expand its hybrid strategy.
