Nike Faces Another Test for Its Turnaround
Nike is approaching its latest earnings report with investors focused less on a single quarter and more on whether the sportswear giant can begin reversing a prolonged period of weaker sales. The company is expected to report fiscal first-quarter earnings of 43 cents per share on revenue of approximately $11.32 billion. Management has previously indicated that sales could remain roughly flat through the first half of fiscal 2027, putting greater emphasis on margins, regional performance and evidence that its turnaround strategy is beginning to stabilize the business.
China Remains a Critical Pressure Point
China remains one of Nike’s most important challenges. Sales in the market declined 12% in the previous quarter, adding pressure to a business that historically viewed China as a major source of international growth. CEO Elliott Hill has emphasized that the company remains committed to rebuilding its position there, but the recovery is likely to depend on consumer demand, product relevance and Nike’s ability to compete in an increasingly crowded market.
North America, Nike’s largest market, also requires close attention. Revenue reached $4.83 billion in the previous quarter, below Wall Street’s $4.88 billion expectation. With analysts forecasting approximately $45.31 billion in revenue for the full fiscal year, the company will need more than stabilization in China to generate a meaningful acceleration in overall growth.
Margins Could Provide an Early Sign of Progress
While revenue remains under pressure, Nike has indicated that fiscal first-quarter gross margin should improve slightly from the prior-year period. That guidance makes profitability an important component of the upcoming report, particularly as the company works through its broader restructuring and product strategy. A nearly $986 million tariff refund also provided an unusually large boost to the previous quarter, contributing 52 cents per share, meaning investors will need to distinguish underlying operating performance from one-time benefits.
Investor Expectations Remain Elevated
Nike’s turnaround is taking place against a difficult consumer backdrop, with inflation, geopolitical uncertainty and cautious spending affecting discretionary purchases. The company has also changed leadership, with former Pfizer executive David Denton becoming chief financial officer in August. Analysts expect second-quarter revenue of roughly $11.79 billion, making forward guidance particularly important as investors assess whether the company can transition from stabilization toward sustainable growth.
Shares have fallen more than 40% this year, reflecting the market’s skepticism surrounding the recovery. The next phase will depend on whether Nike can improve demand without sacrificing margins, regain momentum in China and strengthen its competitive position. Thursday’s results and management commentary may therefore provide investors with a clearer indication of how much longer the turnaround could take and which parts of the business are beginning to respond.
