Key Points

  • Nvidia authorized an additional $150 billion share repurchase program, lifting its remaining buyback capacity to approximately $235 billion through fiscal 2028.
  • NVDA shares gained about 1.68% on September 28 to $228.86, after declining roughly 1% during the previous Monday-to-Friday trading period.
  • The buyback could support earnings per share and provide additional demand for Nvidia stock, but its longer-term impact remains dependent on AI spending, earnings growth, competition and valuation.

Nvidia has introduced one of the largest corporate capital-return programs in U.S. equity-market history, authorizing an additional $150 billion in share repurchases as investors reassess the next phase of the artificial-intelligence investment cycle. The announcement comes as Nvidia remains central to global AI infrastructure spending, while rising bond yields, geopolitical uncertainty and intensifying semiconductor competition are creating a more demanding environment for technology valuations.

Nvidia Expands Its Buyback Capacity to $235 Billion

Nvidia’s board approved the additional authorization on September 28, taking the company’s remaining repurchase capacity to approximately $235 billion, with the company expecting to use the program through fiscal 2028. The authorization surpasses Apple’s previous $110 billion record from 2024 and gives Nvidia substantial flexibility to return capital while continuing to fund research, development and AI infrastructure opportunities.

A larger buyback can reduce the number of shares outstanding over time, potentially supporting earnings per share if net income remains strong. However, an authorization represents permission to repurchase shares rather than an obligation to deploy the entire amount immediately. The pace and timing of actual purchases will therefore be important in determining the program’s eventual effect on shareholder returns.

Stock Performance Shows a More Measured Reaction

Nvidia shares closed September 28 at $228.86, up approximately 1.68% on the day, following the buyback announcement. That move came after a mixed previous week: based on the September 21 close of $227.38 and the September 25 close of $225.07, the stock declined approximately 1.0% over the Monday-to-Friday period. The contrast suggests that the buyback provided a positive company-specific catalyst without eliminating broader market pressures.

Reuters reported that Nvidia was trading at roughly 16.5 times forward earnings around the announcement, below its longer-term average, while the company had gained more than 20% during 2026 through the previous Friday. At the same time, Nvidia has been facing increasing competition from other semiconductor companies, making future earnings growth increasingly important to the stock’s valuation.

AI Demand Remains the Critical Variable

The buyback arrives alongside continued investment in AI training and inference infrastructure. Nvidia’s ability to generate substantial cash flow gives it room to combine shareholder distributions with continued spending on accelerated computing and new AI platforms. For global investors, including Israeli portfolios with significant U.S. technology exposure, this makes Nvidia’s capital-return policy relevant beyond the individual stock because of its influence on semiconductor sentiment and major technology indexes.

Nevertheless, the outlook remains dependent on the durability of AI infrastructure spending. Higher Treasury yields can pressure long-duration technology valuations, while geopolitical tensions, export restrictions, currency volatility and competition in AI accelerators could affect future growth assumptions. A buyback may provide support during periods of market weakness, but it cannot independently offset a material deterioration in earnings expectations.

Looking ahead, investors will likely focus on the pace of actual repurchases, Nvidia’s cash generation and the next earnings cycle for evidence that AI demand remains sufficiently strong to support elevated capital returns. The $235 billion authorization provides Nvidia with significant financial flexibility, but the longer-term market impact will depend on the interaction between buybacks, earnings growth, valuation multiples and the broader cost of capital. For Israeli and international asset allocators, those variables may prove more consequential than the headline size of the authorization alone.
