Key Points
- Nvidia authorized an additional $150 billion in share repurchases, lifting remaining capacity to $235 billion through fiscal 2028.
- The record authorization comes as Nvidia’s shares have gained just over 20% this year, broadly tracking the Nasdaq 100 but trailing AMD and Intel.
- Nvidia is generating substantial cash from AI infrastructure demand, but its valuation and competitive position are increasingly central to investor expectations.
Nvidia has authorized its largest-ever increase in share repurchases, adding $150 billion to its existing program as investors assess whether the company can maintain its dominance in the rapidly expanding AI-chip market. The decision comes at a time when Nvidia continues to generate exceptional cash flow, while its stock performance has increasingly lagged several semiconductor peers amid intensifying competition.
Record Buyback Reflects Nvidia’s Cash Generation
The additional authorization brings Nvidia’s remaining repurchase capacity to $235 billion, which the company expects to deploy through fiscal 2028. The increase surpasses Apple’s $110 billion authorization in 2024 and represents the largest increase in a corporate share-repurchase program, according to Reuters. Nvidia ended its July quarter with $22.44 billion in cash and cash equivalents, providing substantial liquidity alongside its continuing operating cash generation.
The scale of the program also needs to be viewed against Nvidia’s existing capital-return activity. During the first half of fiscal 2027, the company repurchased 203 million shares for approximately $39.8 billion. Its latest filing showed that the board had previously authorized an additional $80 billion in May, illustrating how quickly the company has expanded shareholder returns alongside its AI-driven earnings growth.
AI Demand Remains the Core Financial Engine
Nvidia’s ability to fund such a large program is closely connected to the extraordinary expansion of AI infrastructure spending. In its fiscal second quarter, revenue reached $96.2 billion, up 106% from a year earlier, while data-center revenue rose 117% to $89 billion. The results demonstrate that demand for accelerated computing remains the central driver of Nvidia’s financial performance, with Blackwell Ultra systems supporting the latest growth cycle.
Management has also projected approximately 70% revenue growth for fiscal 2028, according to Reuters. That outlook provides the financial foundation for continued investment in products, infrastructure and strategic opportunities while simultaneously returning capital to shareholders. However, the durability of AI capital expenditure remains an important variable because Nvidia’s growth expectations increasingly depend on sustained spending by hyperscalers, AI developers, enterprises and sovereign customers.
Valuation Signals a More Selective Market
The buyback arrives as Nvidia’s stock performance has become less dominant relative to several semiconductor competitors. Through September 25, the shares had gained just over 20% for the year, broadly matching the Nasdaq 100, while AMD had more than doubled and Intel had more than tripled. Nvidia shares subsequently rose more than 2% following the buyback announcement, indicating an immediate positive market reaction.
At the same time, Reuters reported that Nvidia was trading at approximately 16.5 times 12-month forward earnings, its lowest multiple since January 2015 and below its 15-year average of about 30 times, based on LSEG data. The lower multiple may indicate that investors are placing greater emphasis on the sustainability of future profit growth as competition increases across the AI-chip industry.
What to Watch as Competition Intensifies
The next phase for Nvidia will involve balancing capital returns with continued investment in its technological platform. The company remains deeply exposed to the pace of AI infrastructure deployment, competitive products from companies such as AMD and Intel, customer spending plans and the development of alternative AI accelerators. For global investors, including those monitoring U.S. technology exposure from Israel, the key indicators will be data-center growth, margins, cash generation, buyback execution and forward AI demand. Nvidia’s record authorization underscores the financial strength generated by the AI cycle, but its long-term impact will ultimately depend on whether that cash generation remains durable as the semiconductor landscape becomes more competitive.
