Key Points
- METU targets 200% of Meta Platforms’ daily share performance before fees and expenses, making it significantly more volatile than the underlying stock.
- The ETF rose 22.8% on September 21 and another 8.86% on September 24 as Meta shares rallied on renewed AI optimism.
- Daily leverage creates compounding and volatility risks that can make longer-term returns diverge materially from twice Meta’s cumulative performance.
The renewed strength in Meta Platforms shares has brought leveraged exposure back into focus as investors reassess the potential economic impact of artificial intelligence. The Direxion Daily META Bull 2X ETF, ticker METU, is designed to amplify Meta’s daily move, turning a large-cap technology rally into a substantially more volatile trading instrument.
Meta’s AI Momentum Reaches Leveraged Products
Meta shares have experienced a sharp September rebound, rising from $613.48 on September 8 to $741.24 on September 21 before closing at $736.59 on September 22. The move accelerated after renewed enthusiasm around Meta’s AI strategy and its Muse personal AI product, while the company’s September Connect event kept attention focused on its broader AI and hardware roadmap.
That momentum was amplified in METU. The ETF closed at $32.42 on September 21, a 22.8% daily increase, followed by gains of 2.10% on September 23 and 8.86% on September 24, when it closed at $35.39. Trading volume exceeded 10.7 million shares on September 24, highlighting the level of market activity surrounding the product.
How the 2X Structure Changes the Risk Profile
METU does not simply provide long-term ownership of Meta. Direxion states that the fund seeks daily investment results equal to 200% of the performance of Meta common shares, before fees and expenses. The fund was launched in June 2024 and currently carries a 1.02% net expense ratio.
The daily reset is critical. If Meta rises sharply in one session, METU can generate approximately twice that daily move, but the same mechanism works in reverse when the underlying stock declines. Over multiple sessions, compounding means the ETF’s cumulative return can differ substantially from two times Meta’s overall return, particularly in volatile or sideways markets.
Meta’s Fundamentals Remain Central
The underlying company continues to provide the fundamental backdrop for the leveraged product. Meta reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $60.8 billion, up 28% year over year, while advertising impressions increased 14% and average price per advertisement rose 12%. At the same time, operating income declined 8% to $18.8 billion as costs and expenses increased 55%, while capital expenditure reached $31.1 billion during the quarter.
For investors monitoring METU, the central issue is therefore not only Meta’s share-price momentum but whether accelerating AI investment can translate into sustainable revenue and earnings growth. Meta expects 2026 capital expenditure of $130–145 billion, making AI infrastructure spending an increasingly important variable for margins, cash flow and valuation.
Going forward, Meta’s ability to sustain advertising growth while monetizing AI investments will remain a key market variable. For METU specifically, investors will also need to monitor daily volatility, leverage effects, financing and expense costs, and the potential divergence between the ETF’s multi-day performance and twice Meta’s cumulative return.
