The technology sector remains one of the central drivers of global equity markets as artificial intelligence investment continues to influence semiconductor demand, cloud infrastructure and corporate spending. Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund ETF Shares, traded under the ticker VGT, offers broad exposure to the U.S. information technology sector while retaining substantial concentration in the largest technology companies.

Strong Returns Reflect the AI Investment Cycle

VGT delivered a 27.72% year-to-date return through July 31, 2026, while its one-year return reached 31.68%. Over five years, the fund generated an average annual return of 17.82%, compared with 23.98% over 10 years. The ETF’s expense ratio stands at 0.09%, keeping its annual operating costs relatively low for a specialized sector fund.

The performance reflects continued strength across major parts of the technology ecosystem. Semiconductor companies have benefited from demand for AI accelerators, memory and advanced manufacturing equipment, while large technology platforms continue to expand spending on computing infrastructure and software.

Mega-Cap Technology Drives a Large Share of Exposure

VGT held roughly 324 positions as of July 31, 2026, but its portfolio remains concentrated among its largest companies. Nvidia represented 17.15% of assets, Apple 16.24% and Microsoft 10.96%. Broadcom accounted for 4.21%, followed by Micron Technology at 3.82% and AMD at 3.18%.

The concentration means that VGT provides diversification across hundreds of technology-related holdings, but its returns can still be heavily influenced by a relatively small group of mega-cap companies. Nvidia and other semiconductor leaders are particularly important because their earnings expectations are closely linked to the pace of AI infrastructure investment.

Sector Exposure Brings Both Opportunity and Risk

The fund’s technology exposure extends across semiconductors, hardware, software and equipment manufacturers. As of July 31, semiconductors represented 36.30% of the portfolio, while technology hardware, storage and peripherals accounted for 20.40% and systems software for 16.00%.

This composition creates sensitivity to interest rates, corporate capital expenditure and technology valuations. Higher borrowing costs can pressure growth-oriented technology stocks by reducing the present value assigned to future earnings. At the same time, stronger-than-expected AI spending could support semiconductor revenue, data-center investment and demand for related equipment.

Going forward, investors will be watching AI infrastructure spending, semiconductor pricing, corporate technology budgets and the earnings trajectory of VGT’s largest holdings. The pace at which AI investment translates into sustainable revenue and cash-flow growth will remain particularly important, while elevated valuations and portfolio concentration could amplify the impact of any change in expectations.
