Key Points

  • SOXS targets -300% of the daily performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index, providing inverse leveraged exposure to the semiconductor sector.
  • The ETF's NAV stood at $43.19 on September 9, 2026, while its year-to-date NAV return through August 31 was -92.07%.
  • Daily leverage, compounding effects and semiconductor-sector volatility make the fund fundamentally different from a conventional inverse ETF.

Semiconductor stocks remain closely tied to global AI investment, data-center spending and expectations for technology earnings, leaving the sector highly sensitive to changes in growth expectations and valuations. The Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3X Shares, traded under the ticker SOXS, offers the inverse side of that exposure by targeting three times the daily opposite performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index.

Leveraged Exposure to a Semiconductor Decline

SOXS seeks daily investment results equal to 300% of the inverse performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index, before fees and expenses. The index provides broad exposure to U.S.-listed semiconductor companies, meaning the ETF’s performance is designed to move sharply higher when the underlying index falls and sharply lower when semiconductor stocks rise.

The structure makes SOXS a tactical instrument rather than a conventional long-term sector fund. Its objective is measured over a single trading day. Over periods longer than one day, the fund should not be expected to deliver exactly three times the inverse cumulative performance of its benchmark because daily compounding can materially alter returns.

Sharp Declines Highlight the Impact of Compounding

SOXS had a NAV of $43.19 on September 9, 2026, after falling 2.04% in a single session. The market price closed at $43.24, down 1.91% that day. Through August 31, the ETF’s NAV had declined 92.07% year to date, while its one-year decline reached 96.43%.

The magnitude of those losses illustrates the effect of sustained semiconductor-sector gains on an inverse leveraged fund. Over three months through August 31, SOXS recorded a 22.03% decline, while its five-year NAV return stood at -78.58%. These figures also demonstrate why the fund’s daily objective cannot simply be applied to longer investment periods.

AI Spending Creates a Two-Sided Risk Profile

SOXS is particularly sensitive to the investment cycle surrounding artificial intelligence. Strong demand for AI accelerators, memory, advanced manufacturing equipment and data-center infrastructure can support semiconductor revenues and valuations, creating pressure on an inverse leveraged ETF. Conversely, weaker corporate technology spending, slowing AI infrastructure investment, rising financing costs or a broad reassessment of semiconductor valuations could create conditions in which inverse exposure becomes more responsive.

The fund carries a 1.00% expense ratio and trades on the NYSE Arca. Direxion also executed reverse splits of SOXS during 2026, reflecting the fund’s significant long-term price erosion and the operational characteristics of leveraged products.

Going forward, investors will be watching semiconductor earnings expectations, AI infrastructure spending, chip pricing, interest-rate conditions and valuations across major semiconductor companies. For SOXS, the key variable remains the path of the underlying index on a daily basis, while volatility and compounding can materially influence results over longer periods.
