Novo’s Pipeline Expansion Meets Investor Skepticism

Novo Nordisk is attempting to reshape its growth strategy as the company prepares for a future in which semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, eventually loses exclusivity in key markets. The Danish drugmaker has set an ambition to launch more than five potential blockbuster medicines by 2030, but the announcement did little to reassure investors.

The company’s shares fell 8% after its Capital Markets Day, extending a two-year decline. Analysts cited limited new information and questioned whether the strategy sufficiently reduced the risks surrounding Novo’s longer-term growth trajectory. At the same time, shares of rival Eli Lilly have risen 58% over the past 12 months, highlighting the competitive pressure facing Novo.

Management Says Trust Must Be Rebuilt Over Time

Investor confidence has become a central issue for Novo’s new strategy. CEO Mike Doustdar acknowledged that the market reaction demonstrated that the company still has work to do in rebuilding trust.

Doustdar said credibility would need to be established through financial and scientific results “quarter by quarter.” That places greater importance on execution, as investors assess whether the company’s pipeline can translate into commercially meaningful products rather than simply a larger collection of development programs.

From Focused Strategy to Broader Pipeline

The push to diversify also represents an evolution from the narrower strategy Doustdar emphasized when he became CEO last August. At that time, the company focused heavily on diabetes and obesity while seeking greater simplicity and concentration.

Doustdar argued that the latest expansion does not represent a fundamental reversal. He said Novo had already seen a fourfold increase in early-stage assets moving toward clinical development outside its core areas during the previous three to four years, while the core pipeline remained broadly flat. With that foundation now in place, management believes it can broaden its ambitions into cardiovascular, liver and blood disorders.

Obesity Strategy Shifts Toward Multiple Products

Novo is also betting that the future obesity market will not be dominated by a single successor to Wegovy. Instead, the company is developing a portfolio aimed at different patient preferences, including treatments designed for moderate weight loss, greater weight loss, muscle preservation and obesity-related conditions.

The pipeline includes CagriSema, which Novo plans to launch in 2027, followed by cagrilintide as a standalone treatment. The company is also developing next-generation oral medicines, including zenagamtide and an ACSL5 inhibitor combined with semaglutide.

The Oral Weight-Loss Opportunity

Oral medicines represent another major part of Novo’s strategy. The company has highlighted the rapid uptake of its Wegovy pill in the United States, with more than 80% of new users reportedly having no previous GLP-1 treatment experience.

Novo plans to expand manufacturing capacity sufficiently to treat 10 times as many people living with obesity with weight-loss pills by 2030. It is also developing four additional oral obesity assets that it aims to bring to market by that point. The strategy reflects an effort to compete not only through efficacy but also through convenience and treatment choice.

What Investors May Watch Next

Novo’s strategy will ultimately be tested by clinical results, product launches and financial performance. Investors may focus on the progress of CagriSema, the expansion of oral treatments, pipeline development outside obesity and diabetes, and the company’s ability to translate those programs into sustained growth. The central question is whether a broader portfolio and greater treatment choice can restore confidence as competition intensifies and the long-term exclusivity of semaglutide becomes an increasingly important consideration.
