Qualcomm Pushes Snapdragon Into the Agentic AI Era

Qualcomm is strengthening its premium smartphone portfolio with two new flagship mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. The new systems-on-chip are designed to deliver higher on-device computing performance across artificial intelligence, gaming, imaging and connectivity.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is built using advanced 2nm technology and represents Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile platform in the new lineup. The company is emphasizing AI capabilities as smartphones increasingly shift from conventional cloud-dependent features toward processing more workloads directly on the device.

On-Device AI Becomes a Competitive Battleground

The move toward agentic AI could create a new performance requirement for premium smartphones. More capable on-device computing allows phones to process increasingly sophisticated AI tasks locally, potentially improving responsiveness and expanding the types of experiences that can run without relying entirely on remote computing infrastructure.

Qualcomm’s new Extreme Gen 6 platform includes Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses AI to enhance graphics and gaming experiences. It also introduces AI-powered camera capabilities, including Advanced Professional Video support, while Intelligent Pixel Control is designed to improve scene understanding and image quality.

Multiple Chips Target Different OEM Requirements

Rather than relying on a single premium platform, Qualcomm is offering two flagship options. The strategy gives smartphone manufacturers greater flexibility in matching performance and feature requirements to different devices and market segments.

Major smartphone brands including HONOR, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi are expected to launch devices using the new Snapdragon platforms. Their adoption will be an important factor in determining whether Qualcomm can translate the technology upgrade into broader handset demand.

Handset Weakness Remains a Major Challenge

The opportunity comes against a difficult backdrop for Qualcomm’s smartphone business. QCT handset revenue declined 20% year over year to $5.09 billion in the fiscal third quarter as major original equipment manufacturers reduced purchases.

Memory pricing, supply constraints and cyclicality in the handset market continue to weigh on the business. Because the new Snapdragon platforms are primarily targeted at premium and top-tier smartphones, their financial contribution will depend on sustained consumer demand and widespread adoption by device manufacturers.

Qualcomm Faces Competition Across the Semiconductor Market

Qualcomm competes with companies including STMicroelectronics and Intel across the broader semiconductor industry. STMicroelectronics has a significant portfolio covering sensing, connectivity, security and power-management technologies, while its ST54M secure mobile chip targets applications including digital payments, identity credentials and access control.

Intel is pursuing a broader AI infrastructure strategy spanning CPUs, ASICs, graphics, networking and advanced packaging. Its AI PC and edge initiatives also reflect the shift toward processing AI workloads closer to devices and meeting demand for more efficient local computing.

Valuation Raises the Bar for Growth

Qualcomm shares have gained 17% over the past year, compared with 39.5% growth for the semiconductor industry cited in the source material. The performance indicates that the stock has not kept pace with the broader sector despite the company’s push into next-generation mobile AI.

Valuation also leaves investors with a higher earnings multiple to justify. Qualcomm currently trades at 19.76 times forward earnings, compared with 13.96 times for the industry. That premium means successful execution and sustained demand for its new platforms could become increasingly important to the stock’s valuation.

What Investors May Watch Next

The key test for Qualcomm will be whether its new Snapdragon platforms can convert advances in on-device and agentic AI into stronger premium smartphone demand. Investors may monitor OEM adoption, handset volumes, QCT revenue, supply conditions and the pace at which AI features become meaningful reasons for consumers to upgrade. The technology opportunity is significant, but its financial impact will depend on how quickly the smartphone market turns new AI capabilities into sustained demand.
