Tekever Reaches $6.4 Billion Valuation

Tekever has reached a $6.4 billion valuation after raising $580 million in a funding round, placing the Portuguese-British defense technology company among the increasingly valuable startups benefiting from Europe’s push to strengthen military capabilities.

The company develops AI-powered autonomous systems, including surveillance drones, and says its technology has accumulated more than 50,000 operational flight hours in Ukraine since 2022. The company’s battlefield experience has become an important part of its expansion story as European governments reassess defense requirements.

Investors Back Europe’s Defense Technology Push

University of California Investments and Baillie Gifford led the latest funding round, with Merlyn Advisors, Crescent Cove, Ventura Capital and Iberis Capital also participating. The size of the investment reflects the growing availability of institutional capital for European defense technology companies.

Tekever plans to use the new funds to expand its international presence, increase its industrial and technological capabilities and accelerate strategic acquisitions. The strategy could allow the company to scale its production and technology footprint as demand for autonomous defense systems develops.

Ukraine Experience Supports Tekever’s Expansion

Tekever says its drones have accumulated more than 50,000 operational flight hours in Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. That operational experience gives the company a significant reference point as European governments seek technologies that can be deployed in real-world military environments.

The company was also selected in July by the U.K. Ministry of Defence to provide surveillance technology through a program valued at up to £400 million, or approximately $530 million, over 10 years. The contract provides another potential source of long-term demand for Tekever’s systems.

AI and Autonomy Become Defense Priorities

Tekever’s strategy centers on the growing role of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems in defense. Founder and CEO Ricardo Mendes said AI, autonomy and sovereign technological capabilities will play an important role in the security and resilience of democratic societies.

The shift toward autonomous technology is occurring alongside a broader European effort to increase domestic defense capabilities. Companies that can combine software, artificial intelligence and autonomous hardware may become increasingly important as governments seek faster innovation and greater technological independence.

European Defense Startups Attract Larger Rounds

Tekever is part of a broader funding trend across Europe’s defense technology sector. German autonomous drone companies Helsing and Quantum Systems raised $1.8 billion and 1 billion euros, respectively, in July. British air and missile defense company Cambridge Aerospace raised $300 million in August, while German AI-enabled unmanned systems developer Stark raised 500 million euros in June.

The scale of these transactions indicates that defense technology is attracting significantly larger pools of private capital as governments increase military spending and seek new capabilities. For investors, the expansion of the sector creates opportunities but also places greater importance on companies’ ability to convert funding into scalable production, contracts and sustainable revenue.

What Investors May Watch Next

Tekever’s next phase will depend on how effectively it converts its new capital and operational experience into international contracts and industrial scale. Investors may watch the company’s acquisitions, international expansion, government programs and development of AI-powered autonomous systems. The broader European defense-tech funding environment will also remain important as governments increase spending and private investors seek exposure to the sector.
