Key Points

  • Meta’s Muse has rapidly gained traction, reaching the No. 1 position among free apps on Apple’s U.S. App Store and recording 2.8 million global installs in its first 12 days.
  • Amazon has blocked Muse from shopping on its platform, arguing that Meta’s AI agent was not authorized to access Amazon and raising concerns about transparency, privacy and security.
  • The dispute highlights a broader battle over who controls online commerce, customer relationships and transaction data as AI agents move from answering questions to acting on behalf of consumers.

Meta’s Muse AI assistant is rapidly becoming a major test of the next phase of consumer artificial intelligence, while its early success has already triggered resistance from Amazon. The clash goes beyond a dispute between two technology companies: it raises questions about whether AI agents will become a new layer between consumers and the digital platforms where they shop, book services and manage everyday tasks.

Muse Moves From Chatbot to Consumer Agent

Launched in September, Muse is designed to perform tasks rather than simply generate responses. The AI agent can research products, make purchases, book appointments, organize calendars and interact with online services on a user’s behalf. Its adoption has accelerated quickly. According to Apptopia estimates, Muse recorded 2.8 million global installs during its first 12 days, while downloads on iOS in the U.S. and Canada reached 1.8 million, compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT during the equivalent period after its mobile launch.

Muse has also climbed to the top of Apple’s U.S. free-app rankings, surpassing ChatGPT. The rapid adoption has strengthened investor attention around Meta’s AI strategy, particularly because an agent that handles transactions could eventually create new monetization opportunities beyond the company’s traditional advertising business.

Amazon Draws a Line Over Agentic Shopping

Amazon has blocked Muse from accessing its marketplace for shopping and purchases. The company said Meta had not obtained permission for Muse to access Amazon and argued that third-party applications making purchases on behalf of customers should operate openly and respect the decisions of service providers about whether to participate.

Amazon has also raised concerns about the way Muse identifies itself while browsing and about the handling of customer credentials. Meta has disputed some of the concerns, saying Muse cannot access users’ passwords or payment information. The disagreement illustrates a fundamental challenge for agentic commerce: consumers may authorize an AI agent to act for them, but the websites and marketplaces being accessed may not automatically authorize that agent to operate within their systems.

The Dispute Could Reshape the Economics of E-Commerce

The implications extend beyond Amazon and Meta. If consumers begin relying on AI agents to search for products, compare alternatives and complete purchases, retailers could lose some control over the customer journey. That could affect product discovery, advertising, sponsored listings, transaction data and the economics of digital commerce.

Meta is already pursuing a different model through its partnership with Shopify, which supports agentic shopping and checkout through participating merchants and Shop Pay. The contrast between Amazon’s restrictions and Shopify’s integration highlights two competing approaches: platforms can attempt to control access to their ecosystems, or build infrastructure that allows AI agents to participate under defined commercial terms.

Investors will be watching Muse’s user growth, engagement, paid conversion and transaction activity, as well as the number of merchants willing to integrate with the platform. The response from Amazon and other major technology companies could determine whether AI agents become a new layer of e-commerce infrastructure or remain constrained by the platforms they need to access.
