Nscale Takes AI Infrastructure to Public Markets

Nscale has formally entered the U.S. public markets with a filing for an initial public offering in New York, giving investors another potential way to gain exposure to the infrastructure supporting the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. The London-based company develops and operates data centers designed to provide large-scale computing capacity to AI companies.

The company counts Nvidia and Microsoft among its partners and has emerged rapidly as a so-called neocloud operator, renting computing resources to businesses developing artificial intelligence applications and models.

Rapid Revenue Growth Comes With Heavy Losses

Nscale’s filing highlights both the opportunity and financial demands of the AI infrastructure boom. For the six months ended June 30, the company generated $140.6 million in revenue, compared with just $10.4 million during the same period a year earlier.

However, the rapid expansion came with a substantially larger loss. Nscale reported a net loss of $1.02 billion, compared with $368.9 million in the corresponding period a year earlier. The figures underline the enormous capital requirements associated with building and expanding high-performance AI data center capacity.

From Crypto Mining to AI Computing

Nscale was spun off from a cryptocurrency mining operation in early 2024 and subsequently shifted its focus toward AI infrastructure. The company was valued at approximately $14.6 billion in a March Series C financing round led by Aker ASA and 8090 Industries, with Nvidia and Nokia also participating.

The company is reportedly seeking to raise as much as $3 billion through the IPO and had previously discussed raising up to $3.5 billion in financing ahead of the listing. The scale of the proposed capital raise reflects the industry’s need for substantial investment in computing capacity, power and data center facilities.

Major Customers and Expanding Infrastructure

Nscale operates facilities across Norway, Portugal, Iceland and the United Kingdom, alongside U.S. operations including a West Virginia campus and a Texas data center. In April, the company agreed to add more than 30,000 Nvidia chips to an existing rental arrangement with Microsoft at its Narvik, Norway, gigafactory.

Its West Virginia development has also attracted significant demand. Anthropic agreed in August to spend $45 billion to rent AI cloud computing capacity from Nscale’s flagship data center development in the state, highlighting the scale of computing requirements among leading AI companies.

Nscale Expands Beyond Data Centers

The company is also seeking to improve how customers utilize AI computing resources. In July, Nscale agreed to acquire San Francisco-based software startup Anyscale for $1.65 billion, adding technology intended to help customers use AI computing power more efficiently.

Nscale’s board includes former Meta executives Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg, while Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley are leading the offering. The shares are expected to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol NSCL.

AI Infrastructure Becomes a Major IPO Theme

Nscale’s listing arrives as AI infrastructure becomes an increasingly important theme in the U.S. IPO market. Companies offering exposure to data centers, computing capacity and AI-related hardware have contributed to first-time share sale volume reaching $161.4 billion this year, the highest level since 2021 according to the supplied market data.

For investors, Nscale’s filing provides a direct look at the economics behind the AI infrastructure boom: rapidly expanding demand and revenue, but also enormous capital requirements and substantial losses. The company’s eventual public-market valuation will depend heavily on whether investors view its contracted demand and infrastructure expansion as sufficient to support long-term profitability.
