Asian equity markets are trading mixed on Friday morning, September 18, with strong gains in South Korea and Japan offset by declines in Hong Kong, mainland China and India. The KOSPI Composite Index is clearly outperforming the region, while the Nikkei 225 and S&P/ASX 200 also remain in positive territory. Currency markets are moving higher as both the Australian Dollar Index and Japanese Yen Index record gains, adding to a session defined by divergent regional performance.

South Korea Leads as Japan and Australia Advance

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index is leading the major Asian equity markets, rising 2.20% to 6,863.36. The gain is substantially larger than the advances recorded elsewhere in the region, making the KOSPI the strongest benchmark in the Friday morning session.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 is also trading higher, gaining 0.85% to 64,681.91. The index remains below the 65,000 level, but its positive performance places Japan firmly on the stronger side of the regional market.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 is advancing more moderately, rising 0.23% to 8,752.70. The benchmark remains below 8,800, with its smaller gain contrasting with the much stronger move in South Korea.

The Australian Dollar Index is also higher, increasing 0.36% to 71.13. The currency benchmark is therefore moving in the same positive direction as the Australian equity market during the morning session.

Hong Kong, China and India Trade Lower

The positive performance across South Korea, Japan and Australia is offset by declines in the other three major equity markets. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng is down 0.44% at 24,604.29, making it the weakest-performing major benchmark in the current session. The index remains below the 25,000 level.

The SSE Composite Index is also under pressure, declining 0.41% to 3,875.60. The mainland Chinese benchmark remains below 3,900, extending the contrast between China’s market performance and the stronger gains recorded in South Korea and Japan.

India’s S&P BSE SENSEX is showing only a marginal decline, falling 0.03% to 74,314.59. The move is considerably smaller than the declines in Hong Kong and mainland China, leaving the Indian benchmark close to unchanged in practical terms.

Taken together, three of the six major Asian equity indexes are higher and three are lower. This balanced distribution means the regional market cannot be characterized as either a broad rally or a broad selloff, with performance instead concentrated among individual markets.

Currency Markets and Regional Trading Calendar

Currency markets are showing a modestly positive tone. The Japanese Yen Index has risen 0.16% to 64.11, while the Australian Dollar Index has gained 0.36% to 71.13. Both currency indicators are therefore higher during the morning session.

The stronger Yen Index accompanies gains in the Nikkei 225, while the Australian Dollar Index is also advancing alongside the S&P/ASX 200. The relationship between currencies and equities will remain relevant for investors monitoring regional asset performance, particularly in markets with significant international trade exposure.

The regional trading calendar is also important today. The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange is observing a non-trading day, meaning there is no regular TASE session on September 18. In the wider international calendar, Chile’s Santiago Stock Exchange is observing Independence Day. The Chilean market holiday is a separate calendar event and does not represent a direct trading factor for Asian markets.

Outlook: Watching Regional Divergence and Key Levels

Investors will be watching whether the KOSPI Composite Index can sustain its 2.20% advance and whether the Nikkei 225 can approach and potentially reclaim the 65,000 level in subsequent sessions. The S&P/ASX 200 remains focused on the 8,800 area, while the Hang Seng and SSE Composite Index remain below 25,000 and 3,900 respectively. The S&P BSE SENSEX will also be monitored after its marginal decline. Currency movements will remain an additional factor, with the Japanese Yen Index at 64.11 and Australian Dollar Index at 71.13. The key issue for the next trading sessions is whether the strength concentrated in South Korea, Japan and Australia broadens across the region or whether the current divergence between Asian markets continues.
