Major European Equity Benchmarks Move Higher
The session extended the recovery seen across European equities on September 16. The latest gains were broader and stronger across several major benchmarks, particularly in the UK and eurozone markets.
The FTSE 100 recorded the largest increase among the major equity indexes, followed by the EURO STOXX 50 and DAX. The Euronext 100 also posted a solid gain, while the CAC 40 advanced more modestly.
MSCI Europe was the exception, declining 0.13% to 2,793.44. Its movement contrasted with the gains recorded across the other major equity benchmarks in the supplied data.
European Currencies Fall Sharply
Currency markets moved significantly lower. The British Pound Index declined 0.67% to 133.86, while the Euro Index fell 0.65% to 114.63.
Both currencies recorded substantially larger percentage declines than the previous session. The pound fell from 134.76, while the Euro Index moved down from 115.38.
The divergence between European equities and currencies was therefore particularly pronounced, with most major stock benchmarks advancing while both major European currency indexes recorded declines of more than 0.60%.

The Euronext 100 and CAC 40 also advanced, although MSCI Europe edged lower. At the same time, the euro and pound experienced their largest declines in the latest sequence of supplied data. The next sessions will show whether the equity recovery broadens further while currency weakness develops.
