Ciena is setting an ambitious long-term growth target as the global expansion of AI infrastructure creates increasing demand for high-speed networking. The company expects revenue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 30% from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2029, positioning AI-driven network investment as a major component of its growth strategy.

Ciena Sets an Aggressive Revenue Growth Target

Ciena is targeting approximately 30% annual revenue growth from fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2029. The company is also targeting an adjusted gross margin of approximately 50%, an adjusted operating margin of 32%–35% and a free cash flow margin of approximately 20% by fiscal 2029.

The targets follow a period of significant acceleration in the company’s operating performance. In the fiscal third quarter of 2026, Ciena generated revenue of $1.67 billion, representing 37% growth from the same period a year earlier. Adjusted EPS increased 215% to $2.11. For fiscal 2026, the company expects revenue of approximately $6.42 billion at the midpoint of its guidance, representing 35% year-over-year growth.

AI Infrastructure Is Driving Network Demand

Ciena’s outlook is closely connected to the rapid expansion of AI computing infrastructure. Larger AI clusters require enormous volumes of data to move between processors, servers and data centers. As a result, hyperscalers, cloud providers and enterprises are investing in higher-capacity optical networks and faster interconnect technologies.

The demand extends beyond AI training. As AI inference becomes more widespread, workloads are increasingly distributed across data centers, cloud platforms and enterprise locations. This creates additional requirements for bandwidth, network flexibility and low-latency connectivity.

For Ciena, the trend potentially expands the addressable market beyond traditional telecommunications infrastructure. The company’s networking technology can play a role in connecting the physical infrastructure supporting increasingly distributed AI workloads.

Profitability Will Be as Important as Revenue Growth

Ciena’s long-term targets emphasize that management is seeking more than top-line expansion. The projected 32%–35% adjusted operating margin and approximately 20% free cash flow margin suggest an expectation that higher volumes and operating leverage will translate into stronger earnings and cash generation.

The company is also reorganizing its reporting structure around Optical Systems, Interconnects, Global Services, and Routing and Other. The structure is intended to provide greater visibility into the businesses positioned to benefit from changing networking requirements.

At the same time, the growth trajectory carries execution risks. Customer spending can fluctuate, supply constraints can affect delivery schedules, and rapid changes in networking and AI technology can alter competitive dynamics. The ability to convert large customer commitments into recurring revenue will therefore remain important.

Going forward, investors will be watching whether Ciena can maintain the unusually strong growth rates recorded in 2026 while simultaneously expanding margins. The key measure will be whether accelerating AI networking demand translates into durable revenue, higher free cash flow and sustained profitability through 2029.
